Description
Nizo Okada is a blind assassin known as Nizo the Butcher or Manslayer Nizo. He lost his sight at a young age, which heightened his remaining senses, particularly his sense of smell and hearing, allowing him to perceive his surroundings and opponents with exceptional precision. He is a master of iaijutsu, the art of quick-draw sword fighting, and his speed is such that an opponent can be slashed without ever seeing his blade being unsheathed. As a member of the Kiheitai, an extremist Joui faction led by Shinsuke Takasugi, Nizo shares Takasugi’s nihilistic desire to destroy the world. He is driven by a straightforward, destructive impulse and shows little regard for anything beyond his mission and his allegiance to Takasugi. In the story of the film, Nizo serves as a primary antagonist. Initially, he is hired for a job and later reappears wielding the demonic sword Benizakura, which fuses with his arm and begins to parasitically take over his body. He uses the Benizakura to severely wound Kotaro Katsura and later Gintoki Sakata, but is forced to retreat after Shinpachi Shimura severs one of his arms. Over the course of his battles, the Benizakura continues to exert control over him, causing his body to undergo cybernetic modifications and eventually turning him into a berserk monster. Despite his enhanced abilities, the parasite-like sword stresses his body, and he is ultimately defeated by Gintoki, who uses a specially crafted sword from Tetsuko Murata. After his defeat, Nizo is consumed by the Benizakura, and his ultimate fate is unknown but presumed dead. His key relationships include his service to Takasugi and his role as a direct threat to Gintoki and his allies. His character does not undergo emotional development; rather, his physical transformation and increasing loss of humanity due to the Benizakura form his arc, culminating in his destruction as a mindless weapon.
