Movie
Description
Murata Tetsuko is a swordsmith working in Edo. She is the daughter of the renowned swordsmith Murata Jintetsu and the younger sister of Murata Tetsuya, both of whom are deceased. After the deaths of her father and brother, she continues to run the family forge, maintaining the Murata name.
By nature, Tetsuko is shy and withdrawn. She speaks softly and often mumbles, and her quiet demeanor stands in contrast to her brother, who was loud due to a hearing impairment. Despite her reserved exterior, she is gentle and goodhearted. Her deepest motivation stems from a desire to forge swords that protect people, rather than simply creating the most powerful or destructive weapons. This ideal reflects her belief in the purpose of a blade as a tool for safeguarding life.
In the story of the Benizakura arc, which is the central conflict of the movie, Tetsuko becomes involved when the Yorozuya, led by Sakata Gintoki, come to her seeking information about a missing sword named Benizakura. Initially, she is too timid to even greet Gintoki properly, but as events unfold, she reveals a hidden sense of responsibility. She had known that her brother Tetsuya was secretly working with the Kiheitai to manufacture a bio-mechanical sword—the Benizakura—but she kept quiet out of loyalty and fear. When Gintoki is gravely injured by Nizou, the wielder of the Benizakura, Tetsuko overcomes her shyness to intervene. She rushes into a dangerous fight to save Gintoki, risking her own life. Her brother Tetsuya ultimately sacrifices himself to protect her, and in the final confrontation, the sword forged by Tetsuko is used by Gintoki to destroy the Benizakura.
Her key relationships are defined by her family and the Yorozuya. Her bond with her older brother Tetsuya is central to her guilt and eventual courage. She cares deeply for him despite his misguided alliance with the Kiheitai. With Gintoki and the Yorozuya, she forms a connection of gratitude and trust, as they help her confront the truth about her family's legacy. She later assists them on other occasions, showing her loyalty and growth.
Tetsuko's primary ability is her skill as a swordsmith. She has extensive knowledge of swords and their histories, which she demonstrates when explaining the origins of cursed swords or identifying unusual blades. Her craftsmanship is used to create a sword that can stand against the Benizakura, proving that her philosophy of protection can match raw power.
Over the course of the movie, Tetsuko develops from a hesitant observer into an active participant in the struggle. She learns to take responsibility for her family's actions and to trust others, allowing her to contribute meaningfully to the defeat of a dangerous weapon.
