Description
Beelzebub is a demon who appears in the comedic anime and manga series Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. His true nature is that of a fly demon, a fact that is often played for crude humor, but when summoned to the human world, he takes on a deceptively cute and formal appearance. In this chibi form, he resembles a small, plump white penguin. He has blond hair parted to the sides with curled ends, a small golden crown adorned with red jewels perched on his head, and a pair of fly-like wings on his back. His attire consists of a blue coat worn over a frilly shirt and vest, completed with a neat bowtie. This refined, almost royal appearance stands in stark contrast to his actual identity and habits.
Beelzebub is a member of a prestigious demonic royal family known as the Beelzebub clan, which is one of the seven princes of Hell representing the sin of gluttony. He is also a childhood friend of the series' titular demon, Azazel, as well as another demon named Moloch. This background gives him a certain sense of status among his peers, a status he is very aware of and quick to assert.
In terms of personality, Beelzebub is defined by a potent mixture of arrogance and pride. He frequently boasts about his clan's abilities, particularly a spell he refers to as the pride and joy of his family. He carries himself with an air of superiority and is highly defensive, reacting with genuine rage if anyone mocks or insults his clan's peculiar "delicacy" or "refined tastes," which are directly related to his powers. Despite this proud exterior, he can be remarkably timid and self-serving when confronted with a genuine threat. When faced with the wrath of a more powerful figure like the demon detective Akutabe, Beelzebub's loyalty evaporates instantly, and he becomes willing to betray even his friends to save his own skin.
Beelzebub's primary role in the story is that of an occasional ally to the detective agency run by Akutabe and his assistant, Rinko Sakuma. While demons like Azazel are regularly contracted for their abilities, Beelzebub is summoned more situationally to aid in specific investigations where his unique powers are required. He is generally portrayed as more intelligent, polite, and cooperative than the other demons, which makes him a more reliable asset, though this is a very low bar to clear in a cast of deeply flawed supernatural beings. His motivations are relatively simple: he enjoys showing off his abilities, tormenting others for his own amusement, and indulging his clan's bizarre culinary preferences, which include a zealous love for eating feces, often warmed up in a microwave. When not partaking in that particular delicacy, his favorite human food is curry, which he prefers in its purest form.
His key relationships are primarily with the other demons and the agency's human staff. He shares a long history with Azazel, and their dynamic is that of old friends who are also rivals, frequently scheming against or mocking one another. He is also an associate of the demon Salamander. His interactions with humans are functional; he works for Akutabe out of fear and respect for the detective's power, and he often aids Rinko Sakuma, though not without a healthy dose of mischief and condescension. The character does not undergo significant emotional development across the series, remaining consistently defined by his core traits of pride, arrogance, and cowardice.
Beelzebub's most notable ability is called Reveal. This power forces a person to show their true self, exposing their hidden personality, their real motives, and compelling them to divulge confidential information. An extension of this ability, which Beelzebub considers the clan's signature technique, is forced defecation. By using Reveal to "show a person's insides," he can induce uncontrollable defecation in his targets. While vulgar, this power has proven to have practical investigative uses. Beyond this main ability, he has displayed other combat-oriented powers. He can manifest a helmet-like armor on his head that is capable of repelling attacks from other demons, and his arm can be enveloped in energy to act as a blade. His ultimate form is that of a gargantuan fly. In this state, he gains immense speed and the ability to emit a powerful, abrasive bad breath, granting him enough strength to rival a top-class demon like Lucifer.
