Description
Kōichi Minamoto is the main protagonist of the series, a young man who serves as the field operations director for the special esper team known as the Children. At the beginning of the story he is twenty years old and is a non-esper, relying entirely on his outstanding intellect and scientific expertise rather than psychic powers. He was originally a development researcher within the B.A.B.E.L. organization before being reassigned to supervise and command the three most powerful espers in Japan: Kaoru Akashi, Aoi Nogami, and Shiho Sannomiya.

Minamoto is highly intelligent, calm, and responsible. He possesses a strong sense of duty and a methodical approach to problem-solving, which he applies both to missions and to the domestic care of the three girls. He is notably skilled in household tasks, particularly cooking and cleaning, to the point that his own mother has acknowledged his superior ability in the kitchen. Although he is generally good-natured and patient, he has a low tolerance for the girls’ constant mischief and can snap into an exaggerated, comedic fury reminiscent of a martial arts archetype, which even intimidates his superiors. This contrast between his composed demeanor and his rare outbursts is a recurring aspect of his personality.

His primary motivation is to guide the Children in using their abilities responsibly and to avert a prophesied future in which a war between espers and ordinary people leads to Kaoru accidentally killing him. This prediction, shown to him early in the story, drives much of his dedication to the team’s personal growth and to preventing conflict between espers and non-espers. He is deeply committed to the welfare of the three girls, treating them with care and discipline even as they frequently disobey and tease him.

In terms of his role, Minamoto is the tactical commander and caretaker for the Children. He lives together with Kaoru, Aoi, and Shiho in his apartment, overseeing their daily routines, education, and training. During missions he provides strategic direction and analysis, while in civilian life he acts as a parental figure. He also carries a pistol for self-defense, though he is not a frontline combatant. His significance extends beyond the team; he often finds himself the target of admiration from numerous female characters, forming something of a reluctant center of attention.

Key relationships define his arc. His bond with Kaoru Akashi is the most central, as the predicted future involving her potential to kill him creates a strong emotional undercurrent. Over time, the girls come to deeply trust and respect him, and his relationship with Kaoru eventually develops into a romantic one, with her being identified as his future wife. He also maintains close friendships with colleague and doctor Kenji Kenki, as well as respect from his superiors at B.A.B.E.L.

Minamoto undergoes noticeable development throughout the story. He begins as an overwhelmed young scientist struggling to earn the Children’s trust, but gradually becomes a confident, respected leader and adoptive guardian. He ages from twenty to thirty over the course of the narrative, and his efforts to change the grim future ultimately succeed. In a later segment of the series, he briefly becomes a child, though this transformation is temporary.

His notable abilities are entirely non-psychic. He is a certified genius with exceptional analytical and scientific skills, a talented marksman with a handgun, and an accomplished homemaker. He lacks any supernatural power, making his effectiveness a testament to his intellect and perseverance.
