Description
Muneakira Yagyu is the main male protagonist of Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls. He is a sixteen-year-old student-swordsman who serves as the acting master of the Yagyu Dojo after his father Soyo disappears. The Yagyu family has a long history of teaching swordsmanship to the Tokugawa clan, and Muneakira’s primary personal goal is to officially take over the dojo and uphold that tradition. He is a master of the Shinkage-ryu fighting style and is described as a samurai of noble spirit.
Muneakira is defined by a strong sense of duty and a genuine desire to protect those around him. He is not an aggressive or power-hungry individual; rather, he is drawn into larger conflicts by circumstances. His role in the story begins when he arrives at Buou Academic School, an academy for samurai-in-training located at the base of Mount Fuji. There, he becomes entangled in a power struggle between the Toyotomi faction, represented by Yukimura Sanada and Matabei Goto, and the student council led by his childhood friend, Sen Tokugawa. Muneakira’s significance grows when he discovers a unique ability: by kissing certain girls, he can awaken them into Master Samurai, immensely powerful warriors. This makes him an irregular General who can contract with multiple Master Samurai, a role that places him at the center of the conflict.
His most important relationships include Sen Tokugawa, his childhood friend and the daughter of the Shogun, with whom he shares a close bond that evolves over the course of the story. He also awakens Jubei Yagyu, the first Master Samurai to emerge from his kiss, and later develops connections with Yukimura Sanada, Naoe Kanetsugu, and others who become his contracted allies. These relationships are central to the narrative, as each Master Samurai brings unique abilities and personal motivations into the group. Muneakira’s ability to awaken them and his growing understanding of his role as a General form the backbone of his character arc.
Throughout the series, Muneakira develops from an acting dojo master into a fully realized General. In the first season, he awakens multiple Master Samurai and helps them unlock their true potential, culminating in a climactic battle against a malevolent entity threatening Japan. In the second season, Samurai Bride, he is unable to fight directly due to a curse, but he works to create the conditions for a new power known as the Samurai Bride by helping his seven Master Samurai reach their full strength. His evolution is marked by his increasing ability to inspire and support his allies rather than relying solely on his own swordsmanship.
Muneakira’s notable abilities include his skill with the sword, a mastery of the Shinkage-ryu style that allows him to hold his own in combat. Beyond that, his primary power is his capacity to awaken Master Samurai through a kiss, a process that forms a contract between him and the warrior. This ability not only grants the contracted women tremendous power but also establishes a spiritual bond that strengthens over time. He also demonstrates an unusual resilience and a knack for rallying his allies in critical moments, qualities that make him an effective General even when he cannot directly engage in battle.
