TV-Series
Description
Chikage Kuroba is the mother of Kaito Kuroba and the widow of Toichi Kuroba, the world-renowned magician who was the original Kaitou Kid. While her age is not specified, she is known to have a past as a highly skilled phantom thief herself, operating under the alias Phantom Lady. As Phantom Lady, she was active in an era that would later lead to her being referred to as the Showa Era's Woman of Twenty Faces, a nod to her mastery of disguise. Her appearance in her son's life is often through international video calls, as she frequently resides in or travels to locations like Las Vegas. Her early character design featured black hair, which was later revised.

Chikage's personality carries a notable mischievous streak. This is most clearly demonstrated when she reveals her son Kaito's only significant weakness, his intense fear of fish, to his childhood friend Aoko Nakamori. She is also a loving and caring wife and mother, often speaking fondly of her late husband Toichi and expressing a wish to protect her son. Despite the emotional weight of her past, she appears to be a lighthearted and supportive figure, though a layer of cunning and experience lies beneath her cheerful exterior.

The core of Chikage's motivation and backstory is tied to her life as Phantom Lady. Her primary targets were large corporations and wealthy individuals who had acquired their fortunes through dishonorable means. During a heist in Paris, she encountered Toichi, who was wearing a prototype of the Kaitou Kid costume. When a criminal group that had hired her for a job double-crossed her, Toichi saved her life. The two fell in love, and Toichi decided to become the internationally famous phantom thief Kaitou Kid to steal the limelight from her, reasoning that the criminals and police would focus on him, allowing her to live a normal life. This act of love and protection is the defining event of her past and the reason she eventually retired from thievery. Later, she becomes aware that her son has discovered his father's secret and has taken up the mantle of Kaitou Kid, and she watches over his journey from afar.

Chikage's most important relationship is with her husband, Toichi. Their partnership was forged in the world of heists, transforming from rivals to savior and lover, and finally to a married couple. She is the mother of Kaito Kuroba, the second Kaitou Kid. While she gives him the freedom to pursue his path as a phantom thief, she also shows a protective side. In one instance, she returns home and, in league with a thief named Kaitou Corbeau, conspires to test Kaito's resolve and perhaps convince him to quit; however, after seeing his determination, she accepts his choice and returns to her life abroad. She was aware of her husband's secret life and suspected early on that her son would follow in his footsteps.

In the story, Chikage primarily serves as a background figure whose legacy and knowledge shape the central conflict. Her history as Phantom Lady provides crucial context for why the original Kaitou Kid was created and reveals the existence of the mysterious criminal organization that sought a legendary gem, which continues to hunt her son. She is also the one who helped develop the original Kaitou Kid's legendary skills. For instance, it is implied that she taught her husband Toichi the art of disguise, for which both the original and current Kaitou Kid are famous. Her presence allows for deeper exploration of the Kuroba family's past and the true stakes of Kaito's mission.

Chikage is a character whose development occurs largely before the main timeline of the series. She evolves from a solo international jewel thief, Phantom Lady, into a devoted wife and mother. Her transformation is complete when she retires from a life of crime to live peacefully with her family. While she is occasionally shown to be a mother who is not always present, due to her travels, her arc demonstrates her profound influence on the two men who became Kaitou Kid, both of whom risk everything to protect her legacy or honor her memory.

As a phantom thief, Chikage possessed a formidable set of abilities. She was highly acrobatic and skilled in the art of theft. Her signature tool as Phantom Lady was an axe that, instead of cutting, would splash a harmless but terrifying blood-like substance, a theatrical trick designed to instill horror in her targets. Her most significant skill was her mastery of disguise, which earned her the title "Woman of Twenty Faces" and which she presumably passed on to her husband. This foundational training is what enabled the Kaitou Kid's signature ability to flawlessly impersonate anyone.
