Description
Kaito Kuroba is a seventeen year old second year student at Ekoda High School who leads a double life as the internationally renowned phantom thief known as Kaitou Kid. His father, Toichi Kuroba, was a famous stage magician who, eight years prior to the story's beginning, died in an accident during a performance. Kaito lived a relatively normal, if mischievous, life until he discovered a hidden room in his house. This secret chamber revealed that his late father was the original Kaitou Kid, and that his death was not an accident but a murder carried out by an unknown criminal organization.

After learning that his father's former assistant, Konosuke Jii, had briefly revived the Kid persona to lure out the killers, Kaito decided to take on the mantle himself, proving his skill is even greater. He continues to operate as Kaitou Kid with the primary goal of finding the organization that murdered his father. Through his heists, he discovered the group is searching for a legendary gemstone known as Pandora, which is said to shed a tear of immortality when a specific comet passes. Kaito's true mission is to find the Pandora gem before the organization does and destroy it. As a result, he focuses his heists on large jewels, always holding his stolen prizes up to the moonlight to check if they are the Pandora before inevitably returning them to their owners.

In his everyday life, Kaito is known as a playful and popular student who loves to perform magic tricks. He has a compulsive trickster's personality, often pulling harmless pranks on his classmates, especially his childhood friend Aoko Nakamori, whom he frequently teases by flipping her skirt. Despite this silly and sometimes perverted behavior, he genuinely cares for Aoko and becomes protective of her. Aoko's father is Inspector Ginzou Nakamori, the police officer who is obsessively dedicated to capturing Kaitou Kid, which creates a complex and ironic dynamic in Kaito's life. He also attends class with the witch Akako Koizumi, who is frustrated that Kaito is the only man immune to her magical charms, and the detective Saguru Hakuba, who is highly suspicious that Kaito is the phantom thief.

As the phantom thief, Kaito's personality shifts to that of a gentleman showman. He is elegant, composed, and always maintains a cool poker face, treating his heists as grand spectacles. He sends elaborate, coded warning letters before his thefts and uses breathtaking magical illusions to elude the police and his rivals. He prides himself on being a "magician under the moonlight" and adheres to a strict moral code, never killing or intentionally harming anyone and often going out of his way to protect bystanders.

Kaito possesses remarkable abilities and talents. He is a genius, reportedly having an IQ of 400, and is an extraordinarily skilled practical magician, inheriting his father's talents. He has the ability to flawlessly disguise his appearance and perfectly mimic any voice without the aid of technological tools. His heists are aided by an array of specialized gadgets inherited from his father, including a cape that functions as a hang-glider for aerial escapes, a pistol that fires sharp, spinning playing cards capable of cutting through metal, smoke bombs, and flash grenades. Despite his many talents, Kaito has notable weaknesses: he has an extreme, irrational fear of fish known as ichthyophobia and is also a poor ice skater and billiards player.

Within the story, Kaito's most significant relationship is with Conan Edogawa, who is actually the detective Shinichi Kudo in a child's body. In the shared universe of Detective Conan, Kaito and Conan have become legendary rivals. Conan is often the only one who can see through Kaito's disguises and foil his plans, earning a reputation as Kid's natural enemy. Despite their constant rivalry, they share a deep mutual respect and have been forced to cooperate several times against common threats. Kaito has deduced Conan's true identity and has even assisted him on critical occasions, such as by disguising himself as Shiho Miyano to deceive the Black Organization.

Throughout his development, Kaito has evolved from a young man seeking vengeance for his father's death into a more principled guardian. His goal shifted to the proactive mission of preventing Pandora from falling into the wrong hands. While early depictions showed him as more of a mischievous trickster, later stories cement his identity as a gentleman thief who operates with honor. His adventures continue to balance high-stakes heists against a powerful criminal syndicate with the daily comedic chaos of high school life.
