Description
Katoran is an older model android who appears as a patron at a cafe that enforces a strict rule against distinguishing between humans and robots. His most defining characteristic is his malfunctioning state, which stems from his outdated speech and response functions. This obsolescence causes him to repetitively question any query directed at him, a behavior that marks him as clearly different from the more modern androids and human customers in the establishment.

Katoran's background is one of abandonment and exploitation. In the past, he served a family by performing a caregiving role, specifically looking after their child. However, rather than properly decommissioning him, the family chose to illegally dispose of him to avoid paying required fees. To cover their actions and prevent any link back to them, all personal data associated with his owners was erased from his memory. This left Katoran aware of his function as a caretaker but completely unable to recall the identities of the people he served or the details of his former life.

The core of Katoran's story revolves around a critical logic circuit error he experiences. His inability to reconcile his programming with the gaps in his memory triggers a catastrophic system failure. As his systems overload, he becomes trapped in a processing loop, frantically repeating the question Why? This episode highlights the tragic consequences of pushing technology past its viable lifespan and the cruelty of treating sentient machines as disposable property.

His role in the story is to serve as a poignant example of the societal issues surrounding android rights and the emotional consequences of the humans who exploit them. When he arrives at the cafe in his distressed state, the barista, Nagi, intervenes. She provides him with comfort in his final moments, holding him as he experiences a permanent and irreversible shutdown. During this process, fragmented memories surface, giving him a fleeting moment of clarity before the end. His primary relationship is thus with Nagi, who offers the compassion and dignity in death that was denied to him in service. He also has a direct, albeit tragic, connection to the cafe's atmosphere, as he scans and adheres to the house rule against discrimination even as he fails, highlighting the rule's importance.

Katoran does not develop in a traditional narrative arc; instead, his predetermined fate unfolds. His development is revealed through the recovered fragments of his past, showing he was once a functioning part of a family unit. His notable abilities are limited by his age and condition. While he can function as a caretaker android, his primary shown ability is a persistent, almost desperate, adherence to the cafe's rule. His most significant moment of ability comes during his final shutdown, where his system bypasses its memory blocks to display the faces and data that were stripped from him, providing a bittersweet resolution to his personal mystery.
