Sean Schemmel

Description
Sean Schemmel is an American voice actor, ADR director, and screenwriter best known for his long-standing role as the adult voice of Son Goku in the English dubs of the Dragon Ball anime franchise. Born on November 21, 1968, he did not initially set out to pursue a career in voice acting, having originally trained as a classical French horn player. His entry into the field came in 1999 when a friend persuaded him to audition for Funimation's production of Dragon Ball Z. He originally tried out for a minor character and had been recording for two weeks before learning from his co-star, Christopher Sabat, that he was actually voicing the main protagonist of the series.

Since being cast as Son Goku, Schemmel has become the most consistent English voice actor for the character, providing the voice for Goku's older teen and adult incarnations in every subsequent Dragon Ball series, including Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Kai, Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball Daima. He has also voiced the character in numerous animated films, such as Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, as well as in the crossover special Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Chō Collaboration Special!!. In addition to Goku, he frequently voices other characters within the franchise, including King Kai, the fusion character Vegito, and the villainous Goku Black.

Beyond his iconic work in Dragon Ball, Schemmel has built an extensive and diverse career in anime dubbing, often recording with studios such as NYAV Post and 4Kids Entertainment. His many roles include Popuko in the surreal comedy Pop Team Epic, Yoshinobu Maeda in the vampire drama MARS RED, and Gordeau in the Lupin III special Island of Assassins. He voiced the villain Paradox in the film Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time, Jimmy in the Pokémon special Pocket Monster Crystal: Raikou Ikazuchi no Densetsu, and the title character Munto in the OVAs Munto and Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time. His other notable performances include Noshiga in the short film Kakurenbo - Hide & Seek, the fast-moving ninja Onsokumaru in Ninja Nonsense, Tetsugyu in the OVA Giant Robo, and Gisou in Hades Project Zeorymer.

In addition to voice acting, Schemmel has worked extensively as an ADR director and script writer, particularly for NYAV Post, where he helped adapt and direct English dubs for various Japanese anime series. His contributions to the field have been recognized with awards; for instance, he received "Best Actor" honors in the 2006 ADR Awards for his comedic performance as Onsokumaru in Ninja Nonsense. He has also won two awards for his work as a narrator on audiobook recordings.
