Description
King Kai, also known as North Kai, is a deity who serves as the ruler of the North Galaxy, the quadrant of the universe that contains the planet Earth. In physical appearance, he is a short individual with blue skin, pointed ears, and two catfish-like barbels hanging from his face. He also possesses a pair of antennae on his head and is never seen without his signature teashade sunglasses. He lives on a tiny planet at the very end of a long, winding road in the afterlife called Snake Way. This planet, despite its small size, has a gravity ten times stronger than Earth's. His constant companions on this small world are Bubbles, an energetic monkey, and Gregory, a grasshopper with a motor mouth.

King Kai possesses a personality defined by a love for humor, though his jokes are notoriously bad and often involve puns. His sense of comedy is so important to him that a requirement for anyone seeking his training is to first make him laugh with a good joke. Despite this lighthearted and sometimes immature demeanor, he is also a being of great wisdom and intelligence, possessing a vast understanding of the universe and its many powerful inhabitants. He can be prideful, especially in his students' accomplishments, and often bickers and gloats competitively with the other Kais who rule the other galactic quadrants, treating them like siblings in a rivalry. His primary motivation is to maintain balance within his designated quadrant, which often involves guiding and supporting the warriors who protect Earth, even as he frequently laments the trouble and disrespect they bring to his doorstep.

King Kai's most significant role in the story is that of a mentor to the protagonist, Goku. When Goku dies in the battle against his brother Raditz, he is sent to travel Snake Way to reach King Kai's planet for special training to prepare for the coming threat of the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa. This training is unorthodox, beginning with the simple yet incredibly difficult tasks of catching Bubbles and hitting Gregory with a mallet in the planet's crushing gravity. From this training, Goku gains immense increases in his speed, strength, and fighting skill. More importantly, King Kai imparts two legendary techniques he invented. The Kaio-ken is a technique that allows the user to multiply their power, speed, and durability for a split second, though it puts immense strain on the body. The Spirit Bomb is an attack that gathers energy from all living things, such as plants, animals, and people, as well as from the sun and the atmosphere, to form a powerful sphere of destructive force that can vanquish evil. He later trains other fallen Z-Fighters, including Tien, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu, after they are killed in the battle against the Saiyans.

His relationships are central to his character. His bond with Goku is a complex one, evolving from master and student to something like a bickering family. He takes pride in Goku's success but is frequently frustrated by his reckless and naive nature. This frustration peaks when Goku uses his Instant Transmission technique to teleport the self-destructing villain Cell from Earth to King Kai's tiny planet, resulting in an explosion that destroys the planet and kills King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory. Even in death, King Kai continues his role, but he remains deeply irritated with Goku for this thoughtless act and for frequently using his rebuilt planet as a training ground without permission. He also maintains a telepathic rivalry with the other galactic Kais, particularly the arrogant West Kai, who often mocks him.

Among his notable abilities, King Kai is most famous for his incredibly powerful and universal telepathy. He can project his thoughts across vast cosmic distances to communicate with anyone, and can even connect others to this network by simply touching him. While he is a skilled martial artist, his personal combat power is much lower than the major villains and even his own students, so his value lies in his knowledge and techniques rather than his physical strength. He can also utilize the Far-Seeing Arts, which allows him to observe events happening anywhere in his quadrant of the universe.
