TV-Series
Description
Dr. Vellian Crowler, known in the original Japanese version as Cronos de Medici, serves as the head professor and department chair of techniques at Duel Academy. At 35 years of age, he is a prominent authority figure at the prestigious institution, where he is initially aligned with the elite Obelisk Blue dormitory, recognizable by his regal variation of its uniform which features gold trimmings and a ruffled pink collar. His blonde hair is sectioned into layers with a tightly-bound ponytail, he wears crescent-shaped earrings, and he utilizes a unique Duel Vest rather than a standard Duel Disk, a device worn horizontally across his torso with a motion sensor that ejects cards from his Deck for drawing.
Crowler possesses a theatrical and often melodramatic personality. He carries himself with a sense of immense self-importance, frequently insisting on being addressed as Doctor, claiming to hold a Ph.D. in dueling, and becoming indignant when his appearance leads others to refer to him with feminine terms. He is known for calling underperforming students, particularly those in the Slifer Red dormitory, names like Slifer Slackers. Despite this exterior, he is capable of fairness and genuine care, particularly as the series progresses. He harbors a notable dislike for Lyman Banner's cat, Pharaoh.
At the onset of the story, Crowler is deeply elitist, believing the academy should only cultivate the most talented duelists. His primary motivation is to maintain the school's standards by forcing out low-performing students. This is most prominently seen in his antagonistic stance toward Jaden Yuki, whose admission to the academy via a spectacular but unconventional entrance duel humiliated Crowler. In his role as the initial central antagonist, he devises numerous schemes to have Jaden expelled, including hiring mercenaries like the professional duelist Titan, pitting Chazz Princeton against him with new cards, and orchestrating traps involving fake love letters and forbidden after-hours duels.
Crowler is selected as one of the seven key keepers, a guardian of a Spirit Key meant to prevent the resurrection of the Sacred Beasts. When the Shadow Riders attack the academy, he duels the vampire Camula, only to be defeated and transformed into a doll. He is restored to normal upon Jaden’s victory over her. In a later act of professional integrity, he duels the struggling student Chumley Huffington, and although Crowler wins, he is so impressed by Chumley's improvement that he provides the recommendation needed for Chumley to leave the academy and pursue a career as a card designer.
During the second year, while Chancellor Sheppard is absent, Crowler assumes a leadership role alongside Vice-Chancellor Jean-Louis Bonaparte. The two frequently clash over their competing grand schemes to market and improve the academy’s image, with Bonaparte often targeting the Slifer Red dorm. Despite their rivalry, they form a temporary alliance when they believe they have been fired, even challenging Maximillion Pegasus himself to a duel in a bid to secure new jobs, only to learn their termination was a misunderstanding.
Into the third year, Crowler has visibly softened, showing a growing respect for Jaden’s abilities and character. He becomes a victim of an attack that plunges the academy into another dimension, turning individuals into Duel Ghouls, though he is eventually freed. His most significant development occurs in the final year as graduation approaches. Overwhelmed by sadness at the prospect of his students, including Jaden, leaving, he reverts to an unusually harsh and bitter teaching style, cancelling classes and piling on impossible work to prevent them from graduating. Jaden confronts him in a gratitude duel, where Crowler tearfully confesses his fear of letting them go. In the duel, he fights brilliantly, summoning his most powerful monster, Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem, but is defeated by Jaden using the exact same strategy that had embarrassed him during the entrance exams. This experience allows him to accept the natural progression of his students, and he ascends to the position of vice-principal.
Notable abilities and dueling style center on his use of an Ancient Gear deck. This strategy focuses on aggressive, overwhelming offense, often using Spell and Trap cards to accelerate the summoning of his signature monster, Ancient Gear Golem, and its evolutions. Many of his monsters possess the ability to prevent opponents from activating defensive cards during battle, reflecting his straightforward and power-oriented philosophy.
