Description
Professor Lund is a Pokémon Professor who lives and works in LaRousse City, a highly technological city in the Hoenn region. He is known in Japanese as Dr. Rondo. He serves as the city's head scientist and runs a laboratory where he studies unusual Pokémon-related phenomena, particularly the extraterrestrial Pokémon Deoxys. He is an adult man with gray eyes and short white hair.

About four years before the main events of the story, Lund led a research expedition to a polar ice field to study the Pokémon living there, and his young son Tory accompanied him. During the expedition, a meteor crashed into the ice, and a creature later known as Deoxys emerged from it. The legendary Pokémon Rayquaza then appeared and attacked Deoxys, and in the chaos a panicked group of Spheal, Sealeo, and Walrein stampeded, sweeping Tory along with them. The experience left Tory traumatized and afraid of Pokémon. During the battle, Lund observed Deoxys' regenerative ability, and after Rayquaza destroyed the creature's body, only its core crystal remained and fell into the sea. Lund's team recovered the meteor, which contained another crystal holding a dormant Deoxys, and he brought the crystal back to his laboratory. He did not recognize the creature at first; only through his later research did he identify and name it Deoxys.

Lund is motivated primarily by scientific curiosity and a commitment to understanding an unknown life form from space, especially its ability to regenerate. He is a dedicated and methodical researcher who spends years studying the recovered crystal, and he is also a caring father. He is aware that his son's fear of Pokémon traces back to the expedition, and he hopes Tory will find a way to recover. As head scientist of LaRousse City, he also takes responsibility for the safety and welfare of the community.

In the present of the film, four years after the expedition, Lund continues his research in his laboratory, where the crystal from the meteor is kept. His son Tory secretly interacts with the crystal and treats the presence within it as a friend. Lund eventually discovers that a specific laser wavelength is compatible with the crystal and theorizes that sustained exposure to this energy could restore the dormant Deoxys to life. When Deoxys reappears in the city and begins taking residents away in search of its companion, Lund's knowledge becomes important for understanding what the creature wants. He works with the townspeople to generate and restore power so that the second Deoxys can be freed from the crystal, which helps bring about a peaceful end to the conflict involving the two Deoxys, Rayquaza, and the city.

Lund's most significant relationship is with his son Tory. He is protective and concerned about the boy, and Tory's gradual recovery from his fear of Pokémon is central to the story. Lund also works closely with his lab assistant Yuko, and he acts as a helpful local expert for Ash and his friends when they arrive in LaRousse City. His long research connection to the Deoxys, particularly the dormant individual whose crystal he kept, shapes the story because his work ultimately allows the two Deoxys to be reunited.

Lund does not change dramatically over the course of the film, as he already occupies a settled role as a scientist and father. However, his research reaches its goal when the dormant Deoxys is revived, and he is part of the effort that resolves the crisis peacefully. His son's progress toward overcoming his fear of Pokémon also reflects Lund's hopes for Tory.

In terms of abilities, Lund is not a battler; his strengths are scientific. He identified and named an unknown Pokémon, studied its regenerative biology, and discovered the means to revive it using a specific laser wavelength. As head scientist of one of the most advanced cities in the region, he is also knowledgeable about LaRousse City's technology and helps coordinate its residents and systems during the emergency.
