Description
Doctor Indigo serves as the doctor and chief scientist of the Golden Lion Pirates, acting as the right-hand man to their captain, the legendary pirate Shiki. His loyalty to Shiki is a defining trait, as he has served under him for decades and remains fully dedicated to the captain's grand ambitions. This relationship is not strictly professional, as the two share a comedic rapport, often engaging in strange dances and routines together, highlighting the bizarre and theatrical dynamic of their crew.

Indigo himself is a man of extreme eccentricities. His appearance immediately sets him apart, as he resembles a mime or a clown. He has indigo-colored hair, a large build with a potbelly and thin limbs, and his face is painted stark white with purple lines near his eyes. This theatrical presentation extends to his behavior; he frequently attempts to communicate using silent mime gestures, a skill he is not very proficient in. He becomes visibly surprised on the rare occasions someone understands him, and he is known for wearing special shoes that produce a loud, flatulent sound with every step he takes, seemingly unconcerned with the irritation it causes others. Behind this comical and sometimes irritating exterior, however, lies a more calculating and ruthless individual capable of cruel actions.

The primary motivation driving Doctor Indigo is the execution of Shiki’s grand plan for world domination. This plan revolved around a powerful substance known as IQ, a type of plant found on a specific island. For twenty years, Indigo dedicated himself to researching IQ and developing serums from it. His scientific breakthroughs allowed him to create the SIQ serum, which causes animals to evolve into monstrous, highly aggressive, and powerful creatures. These enhanced beasts were intended to be the core of Shiki’s new army, capable of overwhelming the East Blue and, by extension, the World Government.

In the story of Strong World, Indigo is the architect of the main threat the Straw Hat Pirates face, as he is responsible for creating the fearsome fauna that plagues the floating islands of Merveille. His role in the plot places him directly in opposition to the crew, particularly Tony Tony Chopper, the Straw Hats' own doctor, and Usopp. When the pair attempt to steal the IQ to cure Nami of its poison, Indigo confronts them, demonstrating his capabilities as a combatant. He is later engaged in a full battle by Roronoa Zoro. Despite his scientific prowess and unique fighting style, he is ultimately defeated by Zoro's powerful Nine Sword Style technique, Asura.

As a fighter, Doctor Indigo does not rely on physical strength or a Devil Fruit power. He is, in fact, shown to be able to swim, confirming he has not eaten a Devil Fruit. Instead, his combat ability comes directly from his chemical expertise. His signature technique is called Chemical Juggling, which allows him to produce glowing, explosive chemical orbs from his body and launch them in rapid succession at his enemies. For a more devastating attack, he can condense these orbs into a single, enormous mass to create an explosion of much greater scale, an attack he calls Mass Juggling. This fighting style reflects his persona, as the process of creating and launching the orbs appears similar to a juggler’s movements, further blending his scientific skill with his theatrical nature. His own creation can be volatile, as damage to his body can cause his chemical compounds to ignite and explode uncontrollably.
