Description
Gorō Arashiyama is a regular customer at the Lemon Beach House who works as a lifeguard on the same beach. His appearance reflects his occupation, with a consistently tanned or sun-bronzed complexion, short brown hair, brown eyes, and a muscular build. His typical attire consists of bare feet, red swim trunks, and a red and yellow striped swimming cap or hat that identifies him as a lifeguard.
Gorō approaches his duties as a lifeguard with serious dedication and views himself as a heroic protector of beachgoers, always ready to jump into the sea to rescue anyone in danger. His professionalism leads to an ongoing rivalry with Ika Musume, whom he considers a serious threat to beach safety due to her chaotic actions and disruptive antics that interfere with rescue operations. Ika Musume sees him as her rival as the Guardian of the Sea, and their frequent clashes involve everything from her pilfering his meals to creating general disorder. Despite their antagonism, they are capable of setting aside their differences and working together effectively when a situation requires joint action for public safety.
A significant motivation for Gorō is his strong romantic interest in Chizuru Aizawa. He frequently visits the Lemon Beach House under the pretense of being a customer, primarily to watch her from behind the counter. His infatuation has led him to collect photographs of Chizuru on his mobile phone, a habit that continues even after Ika Musume discovers them. His feelings for her make him unable to refuse her requests, even when those requests lead to physical harm, such as when she instructed him to attack her with full force during a self-defense exercise, resulting in his hospitalization. He attempts to spend more time with her by offering to teach her younger brother Takeru how to swim, hoping to impress her, though he often struggles to keep up with her endurance when trying to join her jogging routines.
Gorō shares a long-standing childhood friendship with Eiko Aizawa, and while the two get along well and interact with easygoing camaraderie, they also tease each other frequently. He generally maintains friendly relationships with most of the other characters who regularly appear at the beach and the restaurant. His family background includes a mother who was a successful sumo wrestler. She appears occasionally and takes pride in his work as a lifeguard while also teasing him about his feelings for Chizuru. Influenced by her own eating habits, she tends to try to overfeed those around her and has shown interest in the scientific research of other characters.
Abilities displayed by Gorō include swimming proficiency and the skills necessary to perform lifeguard duties and swimming instruction. He demonstrates notable physical endurance and strength consistent with his profession, though even he finds it difficult to match Chizurus stamina. His character development over the course of the story shows that while his professional focus remains unwavering, his personal dynamics including his rivalry with Ika Musume and his unrequited feelings for Chizuru add depth to his role as a dedicated and steadfast figure within the beachside community.
