Description
Erika Sendō is a central figure in her story, known as a fifth-year student at Shuchikan Academy where she holds the position of student council vice-president. She is a vampire, though this fact is not known to the general student body. Her physical appearance is marked by waist-length blond hair with a fringe, large blue eyes, and fair skin. When her vampiric nature surfaces, her eyes turn red. She is considered very attractive and is one of the most popular girls at the school, excelling in both literature classes and martial arts.
Erika was not born a vampire. Her original family name was Togi, and she is the biological sister of a classmate named Seichiro Togi. Because of her blue eyes, she was adopted into the Sendō family by Kaya Sendō after being given a blue orb that transformed her into a vampire. For a long period, she was kept confined within the family estate and did not experience school life. She was eventually granted a three-year period to attend school on the condition that she would create a servant, known as a "chattel," by the end of that time.
In terms of personality, Erika is known for her inquisitive and straightforward nature. She has a powerful curiosity that makes her eager to involve herself in anything she finds interesting, often with her eyes sparkling with excitement. Once she sets her mind on a goal, she becomes very determined and persistent, even to the point of being pushy. However, this energetic drive is balanced by a more cautious side; she is not reckless and tends to make detailed plans before taking action. Her role as vice-president and her natural charisma make her a leader, but her actions are largely motivated by a deep desire to protect the value of the school life she cherishes. Because she was deprived of normal experiences for so long, she is fiercely dedicated to ensuring that all students have a happy and meaningful time at the academy. This ties into her strongest personal principle: a deep-seated hatred for drinking human blood. She wishes to coexist with humans as friends rather than preying upon them.
Her key relationships are central to her story. Her older brother, Iori Sendō, is the student council president and also a vampire. Her relationship with Kaya Sendō, her adoptive mother, is complex and fraught with tension, as Kaya represents the traditional vampire authority that Erika both fears and resists. Initially, the protagonist, Kohei Hasekura, is unfamiliar to her, but she takes it upon herself to welcome him to the school. As the story progresses, she develops deep romantic feelings for him. This relationship triggers a powerful internal struggle because her vampiric instincts create a nearly irresistible urge to drink his blood–an act she desperately wants to avoid to maintain her humanity and her independence from her mother.
Erika undergoes significant development from a girl who kept her distance emotionally to one who confronts her nature head-on. Her initial approach to school life, while cheerful, is built on the premise that she must not form deep bonds because a future with humans is impossible. However, her love for Kohei forces her to directly challenge the core tragedy of her existence as a vampire. She is caught in a painful paradox: the more she loves someone, the more she fears the pain of separation, which in turn amplifies her instinct to bind that person to her by making them a servant or drinking their blood. Her arc involves finding a resolution that allows her to protect those she cares about without succumbing to her predatory nature.
As a vampire, Erika possesses several notable abilities. Her physical capabilities, including strength and speed, far exceed those of a normal human. Vampires in this world are also immune to many traditional weaknesses; sunlight does not harm them, they do not age or get sick, and garlic has no effect on them. They require blood to survive, typically subsisting on blood packs. A key aspect of her condition is the ability to create a servant by allowing a human to drink her blood, which grants that human a form of immortality but also binds them to the vampire's will. Erika resists using this power, as it would mean robbing another person of their freedom.
