Description
In the anime Digimon Fusion, Baalmon is a Digimon of mystery and tragedy, known as the Mysterious Assassin. He is an enlightened being who excels in all forms of knowledge, a trait that is visually represented by the white cloak he wears, which is covered in paper seals or amulets said to hold the solutions to every problem. His appearance is a unique blend of elements from the wizard-like Sorcermon and the demonic gunslinger Beelzemon, giving him a ninja-like, shrouded silhouette.
Baalmon's background is rooted in profound sorrow. He was once a disciple of Angemon, part of a holy sect in the Sand Zone that worshipped a goddess. Baalmon trained to become one of the goddess's warriors, but he grew bitter as he felt he was never acknowledged by her, despite his strength. This all changed when the Bagra Army invaded. An Ebemon, under the command of Lilithmon, placed a mind-control curse on the sect. Baalmon was forced to kill all the other warriors, including his own mentor Angemon, in self-defense. Consumed by guilt and a thirst for the truth, he joined the Bagra Army as a mercenary, secretly hoping to discover who was responsible for the destruction of his sect and to exact revenge.
In personality, Baalmon is stoic, enigmatic, and driven. He operates as a lone agent within the Bagra Army, showing no true loyalty to its leaders, the Three Head Officers. He remains calm and analytical in the face of their hostility, such as when Blastmon attacks him or when he offers cold warnings to Tactimon. His primary motivation is not power or conquest, but a personal quest for answers and retribution. He is willing to flatter and deceive his commanders, like Lilithmon, to get close to them and investigate their abilities.
Baalmon's role in the story is initially that of an antagonist who shadows the protagonists, the Xros Heart army. He engages them in battle, at one point even separating the leader, Taiki, from his Xros Loader. However, his actions are ambiguous. During a fight in the Sand Zone, a blast from Blastmon uncovers a statue of the goddess that Baalmon once served. When the statue glows in response to Taiki, acknowledging him as a new warrior, Baalmon is stunned and chooses to fight fairly, returning the Xros Loader. He later guides Taiki through the ruins of his old capital, revealing his tragic past and his secret mission to find the true culprit. This marks a shift from enemy to a temporary, uneasy ally.
Key relationships define his arc. His past relationship with Angemon is the source of his deepest trauma and guilt. His connection to Taiki is pivotal; he initially sees in Taiki the blessing he was never given, but grows to respect the boy's unwavering belief in his friends. His primary adversarial relationship is with Lilithmon, who is ultimately revealed to be the mastermind behind the destruction of his sect. When he confronts her, she fatally wounds him with her poisoned nails.
Baalmon undergoes a significant development arc that culminates in his death and rebirth. After being poisoned, Taiki uses the power of the goddess to try and heal him. However, when Xros Heart is threatened by the immense Machinedramon, Baalmon chooses to abandon his own healing. He intercepts a fatal blow meant for Shoutmon X4K, sacrificing his life. This selfless act proves he has become a true warrior of the goddess. He is then reborn as the more powerful Beelzemon, a knight sworn to serve Taiki and fight alongside Xros Heart.
In combat, Baalmon is a swift and formidable fighter. He is known for two notable abilities. The first is Kamiuchi, a lightning-fast smite delivered with a spiritual whip he carries, which is particularly effective against holy species of Digimon. The second is Guiltish, a versatile technique that allows him to transform the amulets on his cloak into various objects for attack, including transforming them into a large gun to fire powerful energy blasts.
