Description
Manatsu Natsuumi is a thirteen-year-old girl who moves from the remote island of Minamino to the coastal city of Aozora just as she begins her first year of middle school. On her very first day in town, she encounters a mermaid named Laura and is drawn into a conflict with the Witch of Delays, who steals people’s motivation power. When she rushes to help Laura, a transformation compact appears, and Manatsu becomes Cure Summer, the “everlasting summer” Precure. Her most prized possession is a lipstick given to her by her mother, and her favourite exclamation is “Tropica-Shine!” or “It’s tropical!”
Manatsu is defined by an inexhaustible, sun-bright energy and a can-do attitude. She lives by the motto “I’ll do what’s important right now,” and she tends to act first and think later, often speaking and moving before she has fully considered the consequences. This impulsiveness sometimes makes her careless or heedless of others’ feelings, but it also makes her a natural leader who charges into any situation with courage and optimism. She is deeply motivated by a desire to protect her friends and to keep everyone’s motivation power alive, and she rarely gives up even when the odds are against her.
As the central figure of the Tropical-Rouge team, Manatsu is the first to awaken as a Precure and the one who gathers her teammates: the gentle but insecure Sango, the bookish and thoughtful Minori, and the strong-willed loner Asuka. Together with Laura, who eventually becomes Cure La Mer, they form a close-knit group. Manatsu’s relationship with Laura is especially significant; they share a history that was initially erased by mermaid law but later remembered, and their mutual trust and affection anchor the team. Manatsu also starts the “Tropica Club” at school, a club dedicated to doing whatever is most important at the moment, which becomes the heart of their daily adventures.
Throughout the series, Manatsu grows from a headstrong girl who rushes into everything to a more considerate and dependable leader. She learns to listen to her friends and to channel her boundless enthusiasm into teamwork. Her optimism helps others find their own confidence, and she never wavers in her belief that every problem can be solved by putting one’s whole heart into the present.
As Cure Summer, she wields the Heart Rouge Rod and fights alongside her teammates. Her signature attacks include Mix Tropical, Land Beat Dynamic, and Marine Beat Dynamic, and she can access a powered-up form called Super Tropical Paradise after obtaining special rings. In the short film Petit Tobikome! Collabo Dance Party!, Manatsu and her friends receive an invitation to a dance party from the Healin’ Good Precure team and must race to reach Dancing Island in time, showing the same quick-moving, lively spirit that defines her everywhere she goes.
