Description
Neko is a young girl who appears in the rental manga stories that form part of the Hakaba Kitarō narrative, specifically in the tales The Vampire Tree and the Neko-Musume and A Walk to Hell. She has the appearance of a beautiful girl with long black hair, fair skin, and light brown eyes, and she possesses the supernatural ability to transform into a Bake-Neko, a creature resembling a monstrous cat. She is considered a precursor to the later, more well-known character Neko-Musume, though she is officially classified as a separate character.
Her personality is initially defined by her vulnerability and her role as an object of affection for Kitarō. Kitarō helps her become a famous idol singer, driven both by his feelings for her and by a desire for quick money. However, her story takes a tragic turn when the Fake Kitarō and Nezumi-Otoko conspire against her. They force her to reveal her Bake-Neko form in public, which horrifies the audience and destroys her career. This humiliation drives her to suicide.
After her death, Neko’s soul resides in Jigoku, the underworld. There she encounters the Fake Kitarō, who has also become trapped. Despite the suffering he caused her, she demonstrates a capacity for forgiveness. She gives up her own opportunity to be resurrected, instead allowing the Fake Kitarō to return to the mortal realm, and she gives him a piece of Nezumi-Otoko’s brain that she bit off during her transformation.
