Description
L'homme de verre, also known in the original Japanese as Crystal Bowie or Crystal Boy, is a recurring antagonist in the Cobra universe and appears in the original video animation Cobra The Animation: The Psychogun. He is a mercenary working for the Pirate Guild, an organized crime syndicate that operates across the galaxy. His most defining physical trait is his body, which is composed entirely of a special, nearly indestructible glass-like material. This crystalline structure grants him extreme durability and makes him virtually immune to most forms of attack, including the energy blasts from Cobra's signature Psychogun.
His background is that of an old and personal enemy of the space pirate Cobra. In the original storyline, he was responsible for the deaths of Jane and Catherine, two of the three Royal sisters who were central to an earlier treasure hunt. This act cemented his role as Cobra's archenemy. In The Psychogun OVA, set after those events, he is resurrected or revived by the Pirate Guild and allies himself with Gypsy Doc, the main villain of the OVA, in an attempt to steal an ancient record that holds the secrets of the universe.
Personality-wise, L'homme de verre is cold, calculating, and utterly ruthless. He shows little emotion and speaks in a measured, menacing tone. He takes pleasure in confronting Cobra and seems driven by a deep-seated grudge and a desire to eliminate his longtime foe once and for all. His motivations are tied to his loyalty to the Pirate Guild and his personal vendetta against Cobra; he seeks to prove his superiority and to avenge past defeats.
His role in the story of The Psychogun is that of a formidable secondary antagonist. He serves as a direct and deadly threat to Cobra and the protagonist Utopia More. His presence raises the stakes, as he is one of the few opponents who can withstand Cobra's primary weapon. The conflict between them is a continuation of their long-standing rivalry, and his appearance forces Cobra to rely on other methods and weapons, such as his revolver loaded with titanium bullets.
Key relationships include his adversarial bond with Cobra, which is the most significant. He also works under or alongside Gypsy Doc, though he seems to operate with a degree of autonomy. His interactions with other characters are minimal, as he is primarily focused on Cobra.
Development across the OVA is limited; he does not undergo a change in character or motivation. Instead, he remains a consistent and menacing threat, representing an obstacle that Cobra must overcome using cunning and alternative tactics rather than sheer firepower.
His notable abilities center on his glass body, which is extremely resistant to energy weapons, heat, and impact. He can also use his crystalline limbs as bludgeoning weapons. However, his weakness is that his glass structure can be shattered if enough concentrated physical force is applied, especially with specialized ammunition like titanium rounds. In combat, he relies on his durability to close in on opponents and overpower them physically, making him a dangerous close-quarters fighter.
