Description
Graham Aker, also known by his alias Mister Bushido, is a central antagonist and the primary rival to Setsuna F. Seiei in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season. He originates as an ace mobile suit pilot for the Union, an alliance centered on the United States of America. Born in AD 2283, Graham was an orphan who dreamed of flying; he joined the air force after lacking funds to become a civilian pilot. He quickly became a test pilot for the prototype Union Flag, mastering it without reading the manual. A practice battle accident led to the death of a superior officer, staining his reputation with rumors that he killed his commanders. Graham ignored such talk, preferring to prove himself in combat.
In the first season, Graham encounters Celestial Being’s Gundams and becomes fixated on the GN-001 Gundam Exia, seeing it as the ultimate challenge. His rivalry with Setsuna F. Seiei drives many of his actions. He repeatedly engages the Exia, developing custom equipment and tactics like the Graham maneuver, a signature mid-air transformation of his mobile suit. His determination and skill make him a formidable opponent despite piloting technologically inferior machines.
At the end of the first season, Graham engages Setsuna in a final battle that destroys both their mobile suits. He survives but is left with severe facial scars. Four years later, during the second season, he has joined the Earth Sphere Federation’s autonomous peacekeeping force A-Laws, given the rank of Licensed Captain and the alias Mister Bushido. He wears a Japanese samurai mask to cover his scars and adopts a new identity focused solely on defeating Setsuna and the Gundams. His persona reflects a deepening commitment to honor and the perfect battle, but also the psychological toll of his obsession.
Mister Bushido’s motivations are rooted in a desire to prove his own existence and vindicate his fallen comrades. He pursues Setsuna relentlessly, piloting advanced mobile suits such as the Masurao and later the 1.5 Gundam. His role in the A-Laws allows him independent action, and he often seeks out direct confrontation with Setsuna rather than broader strategic goals. His personality is characterized by intense focus, determination, and an obsessive pursuit of challenging opponents. He is a skilled close-quarters combat specialist and a capable squad commander, trained in swordsmanship.
Key relationships center on his rivalry with Setsuna. Though they are enemies, their encounters are marked by mutual respect, as both recognize each other’s skills. Graham’s development in the second season explores the psychological aspects of his fixation; he eventually abandons the Mister Bushido identity after being defeated by Setsuna, symbolizing a breaking of his obsession. Later, in the film A Wakening of the Trailblazer, Graham leads the Sol Brave Squadron, piloting a commander-type Brave, and continues to fight alongside humanity against alien threats.
Notable abilities include exceptional piloting skill, tactical creativity, and the ability to compete with Gundam pilots despite technological gaps. He is known for his high-speed, high-risk style and his signature mid-air transformation move. Throughout the second season, he pilots the GNX-U02X Masurao and later the CB-001.5 1.5 Gundam, demonstrating his adaptability and relentless pursuit of power to match his rival.
