Description
Graham Aker, who adopts the alias Mr. Bushido in the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam 00, is a career soldier whose path becomes defined by an all-consuming rivalry with the Gundam Meister Setsuna F. Seiei. By the time of the second season, the confident and honorable ace pilot of the Union’s OverFlags squadron has been fundamentally transformed by his traumatic encounters with Celestial Being.
An orphan who joined the military out of a childhood fascination with the sky, Graham quickly established himself as an exceptional mobile suit pilot. His talent earned him the rank of First Lieutenant in the Union's MSWAD force and later the position of leader of the OverFlags Squadron, a unit created specifically to counter the Gundam threat. The spectacular debut of the Gundams, particularly the GN-001 Gundam Exia piloted by Setsuna, gave the otherwise bored ace a new and all-consuming purpose: to defeat the white Gundam with the pride of a Flag fighter.
The events of the first season left Graham deeply scarred, both mentally and physically. He interpreted his survival as a personal defeat, an insult to his honor that could only be rectified by personally destroying the Gundam and its pilot. By the second season, set five years later in AD 2312, this obsession has completely reshaped his identity. Now a 32-year-old operative for the Earth Sphere Federation’s autonomous peacekeeping force, A-Laws, he has abandoned his former name and become Mr. Bushido. He wears a traditional samurai mask to hide the scarred tissue on his face, using it as a constant reminder of his past failure and a source of strength for his quest for redemption. Influenced by the philosophy of bushido, he dons a Japanese-style battle surcoat and models himself as a solitary warrior. His personal motto, “one-man army,” reflects his singular focus, as he has been granted a special license to autonomously select and engage in any mission he wishes, ignoring all others to pursue his prey.
Mr. Bushido’s personality is a complex evolution of his former self. The fearless, prideful, and honorable officer remains, but these traits have been twisted by a near-romantic obsession. His sole motivation is to settle his personal score with Setsuna F. Seiei, the pilot of the new GN-0000 00 Gundam, in a glorious duel to the death to restore his lost honor. He repeatedly intervenes in A-Laws operations solely for a chance to challenge the 00 Gundam, demonstrating a complete disregard for the mission’s original objectives. His worldview has narrowed to a single point: the battle between himself and the young Gundam Meister.
His key relationships are defined by this fixation. His closest and most significant connection is with his old friend and technological genius, Billy Katagiri. It is Billy who, despite not fully understanding Graham’s transformation, engineers the custom mobile suits that allow him to pursue his rivalry, starting with the GN Flag and culminating in the advanced Susanowo. Billy’s loyalty enables Graham’s quest, even as it deepens his own personal conflicts. However, Graham’s central dynamic is with Setsuna. What began as a professional rivalry becomes a personal and philosophical clash. Graham seeks a beautiful death in combat, proving the superiority of his warrior’s path, while Setsuna fights to live and create a future, a concept that initially baffles Graham. The character’s development in the second season hinges on this conflict. After a series of intense battles, their final duel in the Susanowo ends in Graham’s defeat. In that moment, facing death, he is confronted by Setsuna’s unwavering will to live and change. This finally breaks through his obsession, causing him to discard his mask and the Mr. Bushido persona, choosing to live again as Graham Aker.
Graham’s abilities as a pilot remain peerless. He is renowned for his incredible mobile suit handling, having mastered the complex mid-air transformation maneuver known as the “Graham Special”. Uniquely left-handed, he customizes all his machines for his dominant hand. His forte is high-speed melee combat, and he is one of the few pilots capable of fighting Gundams on equal terms using non-GN or inferior technology. As Mr. Bushido, he pilots a series of increasingly powerful custom suits—the Ahead Sakigake, the Masurao, and finally the Susanowo—all of which are high-mobility machines built for close-quarters combat and equipped with the fearsome Trans-Am system. Yet, his greatest weapon is his unwavering, obsessive will, which propels him into battle against overwhelming odds. Ultimately, it is not his skill but his ability to let go of that obsession that allows him to survive and find a new path.
