TV-Series
Description
Graham Aker, who also operates under the alias Mister Bushido, is a career soldier and ace mobile suit pilot who initially serves the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations. A naturally gifted and fearless combatant, he became bored with life due to a lack of worthy challenges until the appearance of the Gundams from Celestial Being. This event gave him a new reason to live, igniting an obsession to prove the pride and skill of a conventional pilot by defeating these technologically superior machines, particularly the Gundam Exia and its pilot, Setsuna F. Seiei.
Following the events of the first season, Graham never fully recovers, mentally or physically, from his intense encounters with Celestial Being. He views his previous battles as a personal defeat that can only be resolved by defeating Setsuna. To cope with this obsession, he adopts the persona of Mister Bushido, studying the ancient Japanese philosophy and martial arts of bushido under the influence of Homer Katagiri. He dons an antique samurai mask to cover the scarred tissue on his face, using it as a constant reminder of his failure and a source of strength.
By the second season, set in AD 2312, Graham is a licensed captain for the Earth Sphere Federation's autonomous peacekeeping force, the A-Laws. Working as a one-man army under the alias Mister Bushido, he is granted complete autonomy to pursue any mission he chooses. However, his sole interest is in challenging Setsuna F. Seiei, now piloting the 00 Gundam. He often stays at a distance from larger conflicts, only engaging when his rival appears, as he seeks a glorious, honorable battle to restore his wounded pride and make amends for the comrades he lost. His personality during this period is a stark contrast to his former self; the confident and passionate young officer is replaced by a stern, colder warrior who adheres to a rigid code and speaks in an archaic manner.
His key relationship is his intense, one-sided rivalry with Setsuna F. Seiei. What begins as a fascination with the Gundam's capabilities transforms into a deep, personal grudge, though a thread of mutual respect as warriors remains. His other significant relationship is with his longtime friend and mobile suit engineer, Billy Katagiri, who continues to support and build custom machines for him. As Mister Bushido, he holds himself aloof from his A-Laws peers, who view him as a strange curiosity or even a madman, though none can dispute his incredible piloting skill.
Graham's role in the story is that of a rival and antagonist driven by personal honor rather than political ideology. His development culminates in a final duel with Setsuna, where he seeks death in battle. However, Setsuna refuses to grant this wish, instead speaking of fighting and living for the future. This encounter forces Graham to confront the emptiness of his obsession. He ultimately discards his mask and the Mister Bushido identity, putting aside his past grudges to return to a more balanced version of his original self.
As a pilot, Graham possesses remarkable natural instincts and talent. He learned to pilot the Union Flag mobile suit at a young age and was the first to master the difficult mid-air transformation maneuver, which became known as the Graham Special. His forte is high-speed melee combat, and he is known for being able to fight formidably against GN-powered mobile suits despite piloting inferior machines. He is left-handed, a trait reflected in his customizing all his mobile suits to be left-handed, with shields on the right arm and the main weapon in the left.
