OVA
Description
Garcia Fernando Lovelace is the only son of the late Diego Lovelace and the twelfth head of the Lovelace family, a once-prominent South American noble house based in Venezuela. He is a young boy, approximately twelve to thirteen years old at the time of his first appearance, though he shows signs of rapid maturation under the weight of his responsibilities. As the head of his family, he carries the weight of its legacy and future, a burden that forces him to grow up quickly.
Garcia’s personality is a blend of youthful pride and a surprisingly shrewd, confident nature. He possesses an upright and gentle character that seems inherited from his father. However, he is not without childish traits, including a tendency to pout and a sense of entitlement that reflects his noble upbringing. These immature qualities are steadily overshadowed by a developing iron will and a strong sense of responsibility as he confronts dangerous situations. One of his defining characteristics is his profound loyalty to his household staff, especially to Roberta, the family’s maid, whom he treats as an extended family member rather than a servant.
His primary motivation throughout the events of Roberta’s Blood Trail is to stop Roberta’s deadly rampage through Roanapur. Consumed by guilt and a thirst for revenge over the assassination of Garcia’s father, Roberta has reverted to her past as a ruthless guerrilla fighter. Unlike others who seek to simply eliminate the threat she poses, Garcia’s motivation is deeply personal: he wishes to save her from herself and bring her back from the brink of self-destruction, believing that he is the only one who can do so. He is driven by a desire to reclaim his surrogate family and refuses to let Roberta lose her humanity to the "dance of death" that vengeance creates.
In the story, Garcia serves as the emotional core of the conflict. Arriving in Roanapur with a new maid, Fabiola Iglesias, he seeks out Rock, the only person in the city he truly trusts, to help him find Roberta. While the criminal organizations of Roanapur view Roberta as a catastrophic problem to be eliminated, Garcia sees her as a lost member of his family to be rescued. His role is that of the moral center, a child trying to instill reason in a world of utter chaos. He ultimately devises the drastic plan to end the bloodshed, risking his own life to interrupt Roberta's violent psychosis.
His key relationships are with the women of the Lovelace household. His bond with Roberta is central; he is the one person who holds authority over her and can appeal to her humanity, acting as her emotional anchor. In return, she and Fabiola show him absolute loyalty and deep affection. He also has a significant, though more distant, relationship with Rock. Garcia sees in Rock a person who is not fully corrupted by Roanapur, and he seeks out the former salaryman’s help specifically. In their final interaction, Garcia criticizes Rock for becoming a true resident of the criminal underworld, highlighting their philosophical divergence despite their cooperation.
Garcia undergoes significant development between his initial kidnapping and his return in search of Roberta. Initially presented as a somewhat typical child who was easily intimidated, he reappears having matured extensively in emotional strength and stature, a change that other characters like Rock and Chang notice. Chang ominously comments that Garcia will be completely gray before he reaches adulthood, a testament to the immense pressure he is under. Despite the horrors he witnesses, including Roberta’s brutal true nature, he does not succumb to trauma or despair. Instead, he focuses on his goal, demonstrating a resilience that allows him to take extreme action, including shooting a man to break Roberta’s violent cycle.
While Garcia does not possess the superhuman combat abilities of Roberta or the other assassins in Roanapur, his notable abilities are psychological and moral. His greatest strength is his unwavering emotional fortitude and his ability to command absolute loyalty from others. He is perceptive, able to see through people’s facades and understand their true intentions, which he demonstrates in his early conversations with Rock. His ultimate ability is his authority over Roberta; he is the only person who can reach her when she is lost to her violent alter ego, using his promise and their bond to pull her back from madness. His true power lies not in force, but in his courage to confront a killer with nothing but his will and a desperate plea for her to return. His future, however, remains uncertain and difficult. While he succeeds in saving Roberta and averting immediate disaster, observers note that a life of hardship and thorns awaits the young patriarch of the Lovelace family.
