Description
Kai Nishida is a male teenager with brown eyes and gray hair that is cut to ear length, often appearing in his school gakuran uniform and sneakers. He is the younger brother of Risaki Nishida, a passionate member of the school’s Drama Research Society. At the start of the story, Kai is drafted into the society against his will by his forceful sister, a recruitment that happens at the same time as the reluctant protagonist, Mugi Asai, is tricked into joining. This shared experience of being pressured into membership forms the foundation of his relationship with Mugi, as the two share an odd friendship as unwilling participants in the club's activities.
Kai is characterized as a lively and boisterous young man, but beneath this energetic exterior, he is also considerate of others. His personality is one of casual reluctance; he is frequently roped into the dramas and errands of the club, often at his own expense, because his sister compels him to do things for the group. He does not initially share the deep passion for theater that drives the other members, which helps ground the club’s more intense moments with a sense of normalcy. Early in their acquaintance, he asks Mugi to call him by his first name, Kai, to distinguish himself from his sister, Risaki, indicating a desire to be seen as his own person separate from her forceful shadow.
In the story, Kai serves as a key supporting character and a primary male presence within the small and underfunded Drama Research Society, which is fighting to stay active and compete against the larger, more prestigious Drama Club. His role is often that of a reluctant participant who is slowly drawn into the group’s efforts. Throughout the series, his feelings for Mugi begin to change from simple camaraderie to genuine romantic interest, marking his personal development from a boy who was merely going along with his sister’s demands into someone who finds personal stakes in the club’s success and his relationships within it. While he does not possess the same crippling stage fright as Mugi, his notable ability lies in his resilience; despite his complaints, he consistently shows up to support his friends and the society, proving himself to be reliable when the situation demands it.
