TV-Series
Description
Mayuko Kamikawa is a young girl who appears in the anime sola as a supporting character. She is a Yaka, a type of supernatural being that can only exist during the night and cannot be exposed to sunlight. Her appearance is that of a child with long orange hair and blue eyes, and she is often seen clutching a worn rabbit plushie. This plushie was a birthday gift from her childhood friend Takeshi Tsujido, and she treasures it deeply.
Mayuko was originally an ordinary human. Many years before the events of the story, on the night of her birthday, she was killed during a home robbery. After her death, she was resurrected as a Yaka by a mysterious force, condemning her to a life confined to darkness. Since then, she has remained at Takeshi's side, following him wherever he goes.
Her personality is marked by a proud and pompous outward attitude. She frequently speaks ill of Takeshi in front of others and does not hesitate to criticize him. However, this behavior masks a genuine and deep concern for his well-being. She worries about him constantly and is fiercely loyal, having stayed with him for many years out of devotion and a lingering childhood affection. Despite her sharp tongue, she is emotionally vulnerable and depends on Takeshi for companionship and security.
In the story, Mayuko accompanies Takeshi as he carries out his tasks as a Yaka. She is often found sleeping in a cardboard box that changes location around the city, and Takeshi regularly seeks her out at night. Her role is primarily one of a loyal follower and confidante, providing emotional depth to Takeshi's backstory and highlighting the tragedy of their existence. She also forms a friendship with Matsuri Shiho, another Yaka, and interacts with the main cast during key moments.
As a Yaka, Mayuko possesses the limitations and traits of her kind: she cannot survive in daylight, her body is sustained by the night, and she has likely existed for years with little physical change. Her most notable ability may be her resilience and the long lifespan her condition grants her, though explicit supernatural powers are not emphasized. Her development in the narrative revolves around confronting her past, her attachment to Takeshi, and the bittersweet nature of her undead life. The tragedy of her death and her unfulfilled feelings for Takeshi remain central to her character.
