TV-Series
Description
Kyoko Tohno, almost universally known by her nickname Anko, is a 17-year-old student attending Magami Academy in Tokyo. She serves as the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and is a passionate, aspiring journalist. Her distinctive appearance includes short gray hair, gray eyes, and glasses, and she is typically seen in the academy’s uniform.
Personality-wise, Anko is curious to the point of recklessness and highly determined. Her relentless pursuit of a story often leads others, particularly the hotheaded Kyouichi Houraiji, to label her a stalker. She is enthusiastic, resourceful, and not easily discouraged, traits that define both her journalistic ambitions and her growing involvement with the supernatural events in the city.
Anko’s primary motivation is to become a star reporter. This ambition drives her to investigate the mysterious occurrences plaguing Tokyo and to tail the group of students at the center of the disturbances. Initially an outsider, she senses that Tatsuma Hiyuu and his companions are hiding something. Her dogged sleuthing eventually leads her to witness their supernatural powers firsthand, pulling her directly into their conflict.
Following that revelation, Anko becomes an invaluable support member of the team rather than a frontline combatant. She lacks the overt combat powers of her friends, but her greatest strength lies in her exceptional research and information-gathering skills. She compiles and analyzes data about the demonic threats and the shadowy organizations opposing them, frequently providing the tactical intelligence the group needs. During the events of the second act, as the Magami academy students face the Martial Fist assassins and later the machinations of Yagyuu Munetaka, Anko continues to leverage her investigative talents to uncover leads and help piece together the unfolding conspiracies.
Throughout the series, Anko builds meaningful connections with several key characters. She has been fond of Aoi Misato since their middle school days and deepens that friendship over time. She also quickly forms a close bond with Komaki Sakurai, becoming a supportive friend. Her most complex relationship, however, is with Kyouichi Houraiji. Though he often dismisses her as a nuisance, Anko’s feelings shift as the story progresses. By the conclusion of the second act, she has developed clear romantic feelings for him, a development underscored during the graduation ceremony when she calls out his name, marking a quiet but significant emotional milestone in her character arc.
In terms of family lineage, Anko is a descendant of Kyouka Touno, a journalist from an earlier era within the same universe, a connection that further underscores her innate drive for uncovering the truth. Overall, Kyoko “Anko” Tohno evolves from an overly eager school reporter into a trusted, perceptive ally whose courage and intellect make her an essential part of the group’s efforts to protect Tokyo from supernatural threats.
