Description
Akihiro Kurata is the primary human antagonist in the first half of Digimon: Data Squad, a scientist whose fear and hatred of Digimon drive him to commit acts of mass destruction. His background reveals that he was once a member of an expedition team exploring the Digital World, working alongside Spencer Damon, the father of the protagonist Marcus Damon. During this mission, a traumatic encounter with a Digimon left him terrified, and he began to perceive all Digimon as a fundamental threat to humanity. This fear festered into a deep-seated grudge, motivating him to develop technology capable of permanently eliminating them.

Kurata’s personality is defined by a volatile combination of cowardice, arrogance, and sadism. Despite his intellectual brilliance as an inventor, he is fundamentally a coward who relies on mechanical armies and deception rather than direct confrontation. He is cold-hearted and shows no remorse for the immense suffering he causes, believing his genocidal goals are justified. His motivations evolve from a simple desire to exterminate all Digimon as a perceived threat to a more grandiose and megalomaniacal plan for world domination. He seeks to destroy any Digimon he cannot personally control and subjugate the rest, ultimately aiming to conquer both the human and Digital worlds. His hatred is particularly focused on the Damon family, who repeatedly thwart his schemes.

In the story, Kurata is responsible for the central conflict that the DATS team must resolve. He creates the Gizumon, artificial Digimon with the unique and horrific ability to delete Digimon permanently, preventing them from being reborn from a Digi-Egg. He uses this army to slaughter countless innocent Digimon, an act that includes the murder of Frigimon, the adoptive mother of the human boy Keenan Crier. This event is the root of Keenan’s initial hatred for humanity. Kurata also kills Merukimon, one of the rulers of the Digital World, and frames the DATS team for treason, temporarily seizing control of the government organization he once served. He blackmails Thomas H. Norstein, another member of the main cast, by threatening the life of his ill sister, forcing Thomas to work for him.

Kurata’s key relationships are defined by opposition and manipulation. He serves as the arch-nemesis for both Marcus Damon and Keenan Crier, representing everything they fight against. He views the Digimon partners of the DATS team not as living beings but as data to be deleted. His relationship with Thomas is purely exploitative, using a loved one as leverage. He also commands a trio of human henchmen known as the Bio-Hybrids, whom he has given the power to transform into Digimon, further demonstrating his willingness to pervert the natural order for his own ends.

Kurata undergoes a significant and grotesque development as the story reaches its climax. Having collected enough data from his mass killings, he revives Belphemon, one of the Seven Great Demon Lords representing the sin of Sloth. When his control over the creature is threatened, Kurata transforms himself into pure data and merges with Belphemon, causing it to shift from its docile Sleep Mode into the berserk and immensely powerful Rage Mode. This fusion represents the complete fusion of his human malice with a demonic entity of pure destruction. Even after being defeated, his hatred persists, and his final act triggers a device that threatens to merge the human and Digital Worlds, leading to his own demise as he is vaporized between dimensions.

Regarding notable abilities, Kurata himself is not a fighter but a scientific genius. His primary weapon is the Gizumon, which comes in increasingly powerful forms like Gizumon AT and Gizumon XT, culminating in the Gizumon Javelin, a missile capable of destroying a massive Digimon like ElDradimon in a single shot. His ultimate achievement is the revival and subsequent fusion with Belphemon. As Belphemon Sleep Mode, the creature possesses immense passive power, capable of leveling a city simply by yawning. In its Rage Mode, Belphemon’s abilities are purely offensive and devastating, including attacks such as Lampranthus, which casts black flames, and Gift of Darkness, a powerful slash attack. Its most notable ability is Eternal Nightmare, an attack that invokes a terrifying nightmare from which the victim may never wake. The fused form of Kurata and Belphemon Rage Mode is a nearly unstoppable force of nature, only finally defeated by the combined power of Marcus Damon and his partner Digimon, Agumon, achieving the form ShineGreymon Burst Mode.
