Description
GeoGreymon, RizeGreymon, and ShineGreymon represent the sequential evolutionary stages of the partner Digimon belonging to the protagonist Masaru Daimon in Digimon Data Squad. This evolution line begins with Agumon, a Rookie-level Digimon whose initial encounter with Masaru was a physical altercation, establishing a relationship built on mutual toughness and respect from the very start. As a subspecies of the more commonly known Greymon, GeoGreymon is the Champion-level form and is characterized by a more muscular and aggressive appearance than its counterpart, featuring spikes on its helmet, arms, and shoulders, which convey a heightened lethality. RizeGreymon serves as the Ultimate-level form of this line, a cyborg Digimon distinguished by the massive revolver on its left arm, whose barrel is forged from the rare metal Chrome Digizoid and can fire projectiles with the destructive force of a nuclear warhead, all while retaining the ability to fly despite its bulky frame. Finally, ShineGreymon is the Mega-level form, a Light Dragon Digimon that fights by accumulating and releasing red-hot solar energy; its signature weapon, the GeoGrey Sword, is a blade formed from condensed earth power.
The personality and motivations of these Digimon are a direct reflection of their bond with Masaru. This Agumon line is defined by a combative and fiercely loyal nature, often mirroring Masaru's own headstrong personality. The Digimon's primary motivation throughout the series is to fight alongside its partner, protecting both the human world and the Digital World from various threats. In battle, the line displays immense courage and a willingness to push past its limits, as shown when Masaru's DigiSoul surges across his entire body, providing the catalyst for GeoGreymon to defeat a powerful Garudamon. The role in the story is that of the central power in the DATS team's fight against rogue Digimon, the human antagonist Kurata, and even the Royal Knights. This Digimon is frequently depicted as the most active and powerful member of the main cast, taking down numerous Ultimate-level threats and Perfect-level enemies and playing a crucial role in major victories, including the destruction of Belphemon.
Key relationships define the arc of this character, most critically with its human partner, Masaru Daimon. Their partnership is unique, as Masaru famously fights alongside Agumon rather than simply issuing commands, even punching Digimon himself to create openings for his partner. The bond is so strong that Masaru's emotional state directly influences the Digimon's evolution; when Masaru believed his friend Thomas had betrayed the team, his hatred and anger created a black DigiSoul that forced ShineGreymon to warp into a destructive Ruin Mode, a berserk state that could not be controlled and eventually reverted to an egg. Other significant relationships include positive camaraderie with allies like the BanchoLeomon, who provided critical training to help the Digimon achieve its true Burst Mode, and fierce rivalries with enemies such as the Bio-Hybrid Digimon and the Royal Knight Craniummon.
The development of this Digimon is marked by a journey of mastering unstable power. After experiencing a failed evolution that caused its Digivice to explode, the Digimon underwent special training with BanchoLeomon to properly control its abilities, eventually obtaining a new Digivice Burst and the ability to become ShineGreymon. A major turning point occurs when it achieves ShineGreymon Burst Mode, transforming not with physical wings but with a radiant aura of solar-class flames that can form weapons like a sword and shield, which can be combined for greater attack or defense. In a later appearance in Digimon Xros Wars, Agumon was even shown to access a unique form called Agumon Burst Mode, flying with large wings made of a red aura.
In terms of notable abilities, GeoGreymon can incinerate foes with a super-high temperature stream of fire called Mega Flame or fire a more concentrated version known as Mega Burst, in addition to physical attacks like Horn Impulse. RizeGreymon is equipped with long-range heavy artillery, including the Trident Revolver, which fires three powerful bullets, and the Rising Destroyer, which unleashes a barrage of beams from the six guns on its wings and two on its chest. ShineGreymon wields the solar-powered Glorious Burst, an attack that spreads its wings to concentrate light energy to its utmost limit before firing, as well as the summonable GeoGrey Sword. In Burst Mode, the Digimon wields enhanced techniques such as the Corona Blaze Sword, which combines its flame-based sword and shield into a greatsword of exponentially greater power, and the Final Shining Burst, a full-power eruption of energy.
