Description
Batô serves as the second-in-command of Public Security Section 9, holding the rank of sergeant and operating directly under Major Motoko Kusanagi. His full name is Batô Buttetsu, though he is occasionally referred to by the alias Bateau. Before joining Section 9, Batô had a long and distinguished career as a military special forces operative, having served as a Ranger in the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. His unit was deployed to South America during the conflicts of his era, an experience that exposed him to the harsh realities of covert warfare and war crimes. His body is extensively modified with cybernetic prosthetics, including his limbs and his distinctive grey prosthetic eyes, which are standard-issue for Ranger special forces operatives. Despite his heavy cybernetic augmentation providing little physical benefit from organic exercise, Batô maintains a hobby of weightlifting and jogging, a habit that speaks to his disciplined nature and his desire to retain a connection to his humanity.

In terms of personality, Batô is a complex individual who balances a gruff and imposing exterior with a surprisingly warm heart and a well-developed sense of humor. In the Stand Alone Complex continuity, he is portrayed as an outgoing joker who frequently teases his colleagues, particularly the more serious Togusa. However, this lightheartedness is paired with a quick and volatile temper. Unlike the often-calm Major, Batô openly expresses his anger at injustice, cruelty, and bureaucratic inefficiency, sometimes to the point of appearing hotheaded. Despite this emotional volatility, he also acts as a voice of reason and displays deep concern for the well-being of his teammates, especially the Major. He is fiercely loyal and takes his responsibilities seriously, forming a unique bond with the sentient Tachikoma think-tanks, whom he treats with care and affection, even allowing one to use his personal organic oil.

Batô’s primary motivation is his dedication to his team and a strong, personal sense of justice. He is driven to protect those he cares about and to stop those who commit cruel acts. His role in Section 9 is that of the primary pointman and heavy combat specialist. He is widely regarded as the second-best melee fighter in the unit, bested only by the Major herself. He often serves as the muscle of the team, engaging in direct confrontations, but he also possesses significant tactical awareness and experience.

His key relationship is undoubtedly with Major Motoko Kusanagi. They share an exceptionally close bond, built on years of mutual trust and professional respect. Batou is often the only person with whom the Major feels she can truly confide. Throughout the series, there are persistent hints of romantic or deeply personal tension between them, and he is visibly the most affected member of Section 9 when she is in danger or distances herself from the group. He also shares a strong professional relationship with the rookie detective Togusa, whom he often chides for his old-fashioned methods but ultimately trusts implicitly. His bond with the Tachikoma is also notable; he is their favorite superior because he sees them as individuals rather than disposable tools, a factor that contributes to the rapid development of their artificial intelligence.

Batô demonstrates notable development in his capacity for emotional connection. While he maintains his tough exterior, his interactions with the Major and the Tachikoma reveal a growing depth of feeling and a struggle with loss. The Tachikoma’s development, spurred in part by his care for them, highlights his unintentional but profound influence on those around him. In the Individual Eleven storyline, his relationship with the Major is tested as he confronts her past and her actions, revealing his deep-seated fear of losing her and his willingness to act on his own to protect her, even if it means clashing with her decisions.

Batô possesses a formidable array of abilities. His cybernetic prosthetics grant him enhanced strength and durability, making him a powerful force in hand-to-hand combat and a highly resilient operative. He is an expert marksman and a master of near-combat tactics. A notable limitation of his particular prosthetic eyes is a "prosthetic blind spot," a fixed focal range that requires him to physically turn his head to see his periphery, creating a potential weakness a skilled attacker could exploit. Despite his heavy cybernetics, he retains the strategic thinking and instincts of a Ranger, making him a balanced and highly effective soldier. He is often depicted carrying a customized FN Browning BDA9 pistol as his standard sidearm and is known for driving a distinctive yellow Lancia Stratos coupe.
