Description
Ichiro is one of the three titular characters and serves as the calm, soft-spoken straight man of the group. He lives and works in the Nerima ward of Tokyo, where he helps run a daikon radish farm alongside his boisterous brother Hideki and their bubbly cousin Mako. To support their shared dream of building a concert dome for their band, Ichiro works as the head host at a club called Echo da Ekoda, a host club where good-looking young men entertain older female clients. His earnings from this job, including tips and salary, are carefully saved toward the group's goal, and by one point in the series, he had managed to save at least 23,000 yen before it was taken.
In terms of personality, Ichiro is defined by his gentle and stoic demeanor, which contrasts sharply with the more energetic and impulsive nature of his brother Hideki. He is often the voice of reason within the trio, though his calm exterior hides some notably eccentric habits. His most prominent quirk is an intense, borderline obsessive love for small, furry animals. This is most clearly shown through his affection for Pandaikon, a small panda that constantly eats the daikon from their farm; while Hideki and Mako want to be rid of the creature, Ichiro insists on sparing it and becomes its protector. He also keeps a pet aegagropila, a type of moss ball, in a glass jar.
Ichiro's role in the story is largely defined by his relationships with his bandmates. He is the object of Mako's romantic affection, a situation that amuses him more than it concerns him, and he frequently points out that under Japanese law, marriage between cousins is legal, much to Hideki's chagrin. Despite his calm disposition, he is not the "only sane man" of the group, as he is just as willing to participate in the trio's absurd get-rich-quick schemes as the others. He tends to be the most difficult character to recall distinctly, as his personality is somewhat blank and he is defined more by how he interacts with Hideki and Mako than by his own individual traits. He does experience some development, coming into his own as a character fairly late in the series, but he never truly dominates the spotlight the way Hideki or Mako do.
Ichiro possesses a few notable and unusual abilities. At his host club job, he has a strange but effective power: by slapping a person across the face, he can make them instantly fall in love with him. Mako is a frequent recipient of these slaps, which is the primary reason for her romantic interest in him, but he has also used this ability on others, such as a group of riot police, before being subdued by a water cannon. Beyond this, he participates in the band's musical numbers and is capable of holding his own in the physical comedy and brawls that often result from their money-making schemes.
