TV-Series
Description
Karen Ichijō is a student in class 2-C whose delicate and feminine appearance belies her true nature as one of the strongest characters in the series. Born on January 7th, she maintains a quiet and introverted presence at school, which sharply contrasts with her extraordinary physical capabilities. Her defining trait is her monstrous strength, developed through constant training as a member of the amateur wrestling club. This power allows her to perform feats such as lifting a piano without visible effort or crushing an apple with a single hand, amazing even the strongest male classmates like Kenji Harima and Haruki Hanai. Despite this immense strength, Karen has difficulty controlling it, as shown when she nearly suffocates her friend Tenma Tsukamoto while simply trying to cover her mouth.
Karen possesses a gentle and caring nature, and she is one of the more timid girls in her class. She is deeply self-conscious, particularly about her femininity, which is exacerbated by her physically demanding job at a moving company where coworkers call her Ichi-san. Her shyness becomes most apparent regarding her feelings for her classmate, Kyosuke Imadori, a self-proclaimed playboy who openly admits a preference for girls with large breasts. Karen becomes embarrassed whenever her affection for him is hinted at and continuously lacks the courage to act on her feelings. Imadori initially avoids her not only because of her perceived smaller measurements, though it is later noted that her figure is considerably more developed than he realized, but also because he fears her incredible strength.
The central focus of Karen's story arc is her evolving relationship with Imadori. When Imadori once asked why she liked wrestling, she admitted that it was not something she truly wanted to do. A significant turning point occurs when Imadori, Harima, and Hanai work a shift at a moving company with Karen. At the end of the shift, Imadori offhandedly remarks that he could take Karen on a date with his earnings, an offer she immediately accepts despite his lack of genuine intent. As the series progresses, Karen falls deeper in love with Imadori but remains patient, understanding his shallow nature yet choosing to wait for him. Her persistence is eventually rewarded when she finally defeats him in a wrestling match, an event that leads to an indirect confession from Imadori. Beyond her love life, Karen plays a valuable role in her class, such as forming a formidable team with Haruki Hanai during the sports festival's kibasen event, where her agility and dexterity help secure victory for class 2-C.
In terms of relationships, Karen shares a notable dynamic with Lala Gonzalez, who is her only rival in terms of raw power and antagonism. Despite Lala's confrontational attitude, Karen never reciprocates the hostility and always remains polite, and the two eventually develop a friendship. Karen also has a younger brother named Kousuke, who shares Imadori's interest in the fictional band Dojibiron, leading to awkward situations when Imadori visits her home. Among her friends are her bandmates from class 2-C, including Megumi Sagano and Tsumugi Yuuki, with whom she practices for the cultural festival. Her kind nature extends to comforting a depressed Tenma, even when the cause of Tenma's sadness relates to Imadori's lack of romantic interest in Karen herself.
Karen possesses several notable abilities beyond her physical strength. She is an accomplished wrestler capable of performing professional maneuvers such as the German Suplex and her own unique finishing move called the Nymph's Dance, a version of the Frankensteiner. Interestingly, she does not consciously use these moves; rather, her body reacts instinctively when challenged, after which she returns to her normal self and often apologizes to the recipient. She is also a talented singer, even performing in English as the lead vocalist for her class band, with her singing featured prominently in episodes of the second semester. Throughout the series, Karen embodies a character of profound contrasts: a soft and insecure girl trapped in a body of titanic strength, whose journey is defined by quiet perseverance in love and self-acceptance.
