Description
Mikoto Yutaka is one of the three main characters of Princess Princess. He is a first-year student at Fujimori Academy, an elite all-boys boarding school, where he is chosen to serve as the Eastern Princess. In this role, he must dress in feminine attire and participate in school events to boost student morale. His physical appearance includes short pink hair and red eyes.
From the beginning, Mikoto is the most reluctant of the three Princesses to cross-dress. His primary motivation for this reluctance is his fear that his girlfriend, Megumi, will discover his secret. He is extremely self-conscious about being a Princess and becomes mortified whenever anyone outside of school learns about it. Despite his constant whining and complaining about the duties he must perform, he is a reliable character who always ends up carrying out his responsibilities, whether he is forced to or not.
Mikoto is the most animated and expressive of the three Princesses, frequently showing strong emotions and dramatic reactions, especially when yelling at his fellow Princesses, Tooru Kouno and Yuujirou Shihoudani. He has a loud and stubborn personality that masks a loyal and caring nature. He cares deeply about the people close to him, particularly his girlfriend Megumi, and his demeanor changes markedly when she is present—he becomes softer and more gentle, a shift that greatly amuses his friends.
A notable personal trait is that Mikoto is tone deaf and had never sung before becoming a Princess. This lack of musical ability becomes a minor challenge during his Princess duties. Over the course of the story, Mikoto develops a greater acceptance of his role. Although he initially hates being a Princess, he eventually grows accustomed to it to the point where he briefly fantasizes about him and Megumi both wearing Gothic Lolita Princess costumes.
His key relationships include his fellow Princesses, Tooru and Yuujirou, with whom he shares a close but often argumentative friendship. His relationship with his girlfriend Megumi is a central aspect of his character; he values her opinion highly and his fear of her finding out about his Princess duties is a major source of conflict. Mikoto also first appeared as a supporting character in the earlier manga The Day of Revolution, which focuses on Megumi.
Mikoto’s development hinges on his journey from a reluctant, self-conscious participant in the Princess system to someone who begins to embrace the role and the pride that comes with it. His notable abilities are not physical or academic but rather his capacity for loyalty and his eventual willingness to put aside his pride for the sake of his friends and his duties. He can be described as a person with a harsh exterior but a genuine, caring heart.
