Description
Nya is a character in the Demonbane mythos and one of the most enigmatic figures in the story. Behind the ordinary appearance of a rare bookshop proprietor in Arkham City, Nya is in truth an avatar of Nyarlathotep, an ancient god of chaos drawn from Lovecraftian mythology. The character was created by Jin Haganeya and serves as the overarching antagonist of the original Deus Machina Demonbane visual novel, with the entity's influence extending across the anime, manga, and novel works of the franchise.
In the most familiar form, Nya appears as a tall, slender woman with long black hair, red eyes, and square glasses, dressed in a dark purple suit adorned with white ruffles, complete with gloves and a red bowtie. The entity also appears as a man in a suit with earrings, and in truth it has no fixed gender at all, with both forms being masks for a cosmic being far beyond human categories.
As a bookseller, Nya exudes a bewitching and alluring presence that draws people in while concealing a closely guarded secret. She is calm, composed, and cryptic, offering help and guidance that always serves a larger purpose. Beneath the helpful exterior, however, she is a consummate schemer, a manipulative presence willing to use anyone, including the story's protagonist, as a piece in her designs. Yet she is not purely cold, and she occasionally shows surprising compassion and empathy, particularly toward other beings of the Cthulhu Mythos who are usually treated as monsters.

When the detective Kurou Daijuuji searches for a grimoire at the start of the narrative, he stumbles into her bookshop only to be turned away, with Nya cryptically telling him that a far more powerful grimoire is meant for him. The prediction comes true when Al-Azif, the physical embodiment of the Necronomicon, falls into Kurou's life and forges a contract with him. From then on, Nya reappears at critical moments throughout the conflict, seeming to offer assistance while quietly steering events toward her own ends. Ultimately, she is revealed to be the mastermind behind the majority of the events of the Demonbane mythos, an actor playing her own part in a cosmic scheme of gods, monsters, and mecha that uses both Al and Kurou as instruments.
