Description
Claudius is a male character from the Demonbane series, recognized by his youthful appearance, yellow eyes, and distinctive green hair. He is a member of the Anticross, a group of sorcerers who serve as primary antagonists in the story. Despite his membership in this terrorist organization, he stands out due to a personality that is often described as mischievous and childish, contrasting with the more menacing or serious demeanor of his colleagues. He frequently wears modern sports clothing and a domino mask, further emphasizing his unconventional and somewhat playful image.
In combat, Claudius displays considerable skill and agility, using unusual weapons such as a yo-yo or a gendama, which are traditional Japanese toys. Despite the seemingly innocuous nature of his armaments, he is capable of creating powerful wind-attribute barriers and can hold his own against other skilled magic users. He is the master of a grimoire known as the Celaeno Fragments, and through this magical text, he summons and controls a powerful Deus Machina (a giant magical mech) named Lord Byakhee.
Claudius maintains a notable relationship with his fellow Anticross member, Caligula. He often makes fun of Caligula for his large size or perceived lack of intelligence, but this teasing belies a genuine closeness and loyalty. When Caligula is killed, Claudius is deeply affected, vowing to avenge his fallen comrade and becoming more aggressive in his actions against the main characters. His development throughout the story shifts from a more lighthearted, if villainous, figure to one driven by personal loss and a thirst for revenge. Within Anticross, he is relatively popular among fans, partly due to his youthful, boyish character archetype.
In terms of abilities, beyond piloting his Deus Machina, Claudius demonstrates a high degree of agility and speed, making him a difficult target. He once managed to ride on the blade of an opponent's scimitar, showcasing his acrobatic prowess. He is also a capable defensive magic user, able to create barriers to protect his allies. The narrative accounts for his fate and story role vary across different versions and routes of the Demonbane franchise. He has been depicted as being shattered in battle by a powerful enemy, transformed into a zombie by another character, or even outright killed. In at least one storyline, he and the rest of Anticross were erased from history, only to be later brought back to serve as part of a nightmare story. His death scenes are noted for being particularly graphic and violent, a trait he shares with other characters in the series.
