TV-Series
Description
D'Eon de Beaumont is a French nobleman and knight who serves as a member of the King's Secret, a clandestine group operating in the shadows of 18th-century France to maintain peace and protect the realm. He begins the series as a young, comparatively naive individual whose character is defined by a quiet, reserved, and idealistic nature. This initial innocence is marked by a deep-seated, almost fanatical loyalty to the French monarchy and a profound reverence for his older sister, Lia de Beaumont, a fellow agent and accomplished swordswoman who acts as his personal hero and inspiration.
The central catalyst for D'Eon's journey is the brutal and mysterious murder of his sister. When her body is discovered floating down the Seine in a coffin inscribed with the word Psalms, his world is shattered. His primary motivation shifts entirely to investigating the circumstances of her death, seeking both justice and the truth behind a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of power. This quest for vengeance is complicated and intensified when he unwillingly becomes the vessel for Lia's restless and vengeful spirit.
This symbiotic possession forms the core of D'Eon's role in the story and his development. During moments of intense combat or emotional stress, Lia manifests through him, taking control of his body to enact her own vendetta. When this occurs, his appearance subtly shifts, his features becoming more feminine, and his voice changes to that of his sister. Initially, D'Eon is horrified by this possession, frightened by the depth of the otherworldly power and the overwhelming anger that Lia brings with her. He is a man of order and faith, suddenly thrust into a world of occult secrets and supernatural battles against creatures known as gargoyles, which are corpses animated by mercury and dark verses from the Psalms.
As the narrative unfolds, the rigid boundary between the two siblings begins to blur. He gradually accepts her presence, and her memories, skills, and ferocity become integrated into his own being. This merging of identities causes him to lose some of his initial naivety, evolving into a more complex and driven individual who is neither entirely himself nor entirely his sister. His relationships are shaped by this dual existence. He is aided by a team of loyal companions including his wise fencing master Teillagory, the roguish spy Durand who was in love with Lia, and the young page Robin. He also has a fiancée, Anna, who serves the Queen. The monarchy, including King Louis XV and Queen Marie Leszczynska (portrayed as a powerful sorceress), supports him with hidden agendas, placing him in the middle of a vast power struggle between the crown and revolutionary forces led by figures like the Marquise de Pompadour.
In terms of notable abilities, D'Eon is a highly skilled and courageous swordsman, having been trained rigorously from a young age. However, his most extraordinary ability is triggered by his connection to Lia. When he channels her spirit, her superior swordsmanship and a ferocious, supernatural combat prowess manifest through him, making him a nearly unstoppable force. This allows him to recite verses from the Psalms, which function as powerful spells in this universe, capable of combating the dark magic used by his enemies. Over the course of the series, the transformation between D'Eon and Lia becomes less distinct as their two souls slowly lose their individuality, ultimately merging into a single, more complete being.
