Description
Lia de Beaumont is the older sister of Charles D’Eon de Beaumont and a central figure in the story, though she is deceased before the main events begin. Her body is discovered in a coffin floating on the Seine River with the word “Psalms” written in blood, serving as the catalyst for the plot. During her life, Lia was a loyal servant of King Louis XV, a skilled fencer, and one of the finest swords in the kingdom. She was a student of Teillagory and later became an instructor to the Dauphin Auguste as well as a friend and teacher to Anna Rochefort. Lia was well loved by nobles and royalty, including Empress Elizaveta of Russia, and also had a natural talent for poetry.

Despite flashbacks depicting her as a caring and considerate young woman, her spirit is consumed by intense anger, sorrow, and a burning desire for revenge after her mysterious murder. This vengeful spirit takes possession of her younger brother D’Eon, manifesting through him during moments of crisis. When possessed, D’Eon’s body becomes a vessel for Lia’s abilities, including her exceptional swordsmanship and her capacity to wield the dark magic associated with the Royal Psalms. Her unique sword stance allows those who knew her, such as Teillagory, to recognize her presence even when she is acting through her brother.

Her primary motivation is to uncover the truth behind her own death and the broader conspiracy involving the Royal Psalms, a set of sacred texts that have been twisted into dark magic by a cult among the French and Russian nobility. As the story unfolds, more of her past is revealed, including her connections to figures like Maximilien Robespierre and the political intrigues that led to her murder. Through her possession of D’Eon, she actively participates in the investigation and battles against the supernatural forces aligned with the conspiracy. Over the course of the series, her spirit gradually evolves from pure vengeance to a more nuanced understanding, eventually finding a measure of resolution as the truth is brought to light. Her abilities as a knight, a fencer, and a magic user make her a formidable presence even in death, and her relationship with her brother remains the emotional core of the narrative.
