Description
Joe Katsuragi is one of the primary protagonists of the story. He is a young man who, along with his partner Jin Tsurasawa, is a deserter from Phantom, an elite military force used by the ruling Logos class to control the oppressed Revenus population. Joe has dark hair, which is described in some sources as black or grey, and his eyes are often reported as being either a shade of aquamarine or brown.

In terms of personality, Joe is defined by his silence and reserved nature. He is a man of very few words and presents a calm, cool, and collected exterior. Despite his taciturn demeanor, he is fiercely protective, showing profound loyalty towards his partner Jin and, later, a hidden but deep care for the young girl, Sana. A particularly unique and defining trait is his emotional reaction after combat; whenever he finishes piloting his Gladiator mech, tears stream uncontrollably down his face. Joe himself regards this phenomenon almost as a neutral side-effect of piloting, though it adds a complex layer to his otherwise deadly and composed nature.

Joe's motivations are deeply tied to his relationships. His loyalty to Jin is the primary driving force behind his actions. While serving in Phantom, many of Joe's previous partners either feared his abilities or were killed trying to match his intensity. Jin was unique in that he stayed with Joe, and in return, Joe developed an unbreakable bond with him. It is for this reason that when Jin decided to desert Phantom, Joe followed without hesitation. Their decision to flee is compounded by their taking of Sana, a mysterious girl being pursued by multiple factions. Joe's role in the story is therefore that of a guardian and a weapon; he is the primary combat muscle of the small group, using his lethal skills to fend off the forces hunting them as they seek to understand Sana's true importance.

Within the narrative, Joe serves as the cold and efficient counterpart to the more expressive Jin. While both are former Phantom operatives, Joe is the one who typically engages the enemy directly, whether unarmed, wearing a Light Warrior suit, or controlling a Gladiator. His development is subtle, stemming from his initial role as a silent sidekick to eventually taking on a more central heroic role as the story progresses. His stoic exterior slowly reveals a more human side as his bond with Sana and Jin deepens, challenging his identity as merely a tool of combat.

Joe's abilities are formidable and wide-ranging. He is an expert in unarmed combat, a skilled pilot, and proficient in mech warfare. Whether fighting on foot or inside his machine, he dispatches enemies with alarming ease. This deadly proficiency made him an invaluable asset to Phantom, but also an outcast among his peers, ultimately solidifying the bond he shares with the only partner who did not abandon him.
