Description
Albert Chamomile, almost universally referred to by the nickname Chamo, is a supporting character in the Negima!? series. He is a small, white, talking ermine with a long, prehensile tail tipped with black. Despite his cute and fuzzy appearance, his personality is far from innocent. Chamo is a chain-smoking, cunning, and deeply perverted creature with a notorious obsession with stealing women's undergarments. This criminal habit is what drives much of his background, as he fled to Japan to escape prosecution for stealing over three thousand pairs of underwear, subsequently becoming the familiar of the young mage Negi Springfield by claiming he needed help for a sick sister.
Chamo’s core motivation is a complex mix of self-interest and genuine loyalty. He is extremely greedy and has found a lucrative scheme in helping Negi form Pactio contracts. A Pactio is a magical partnership between a mage and a minister, typically sealed with a kiss. Chamo receives a substantial commission of fifty thousand Ermine Dollars for every successful contract he helps broker. This financial incentive makes him a relentless and often manipulative advocate for Negi to form these bonds with as many of his female classmates as possible. One of his most prominent schemes was creating a rigged Kiss Negi game during a class trip to Kyoto, where he set up a magic circle around the inn to automatically trigger a Pactio contract with anyone who kissed the young teacher.
Despite his self-serving and perverted tendencies, Chamo is fiercely loyal to Negi, whom he addresses as Aniki. Negi freed him from a trap when the boy was only five years old, and Chamo has never forgotten this debt. He acts as a guide and advisor to Negi, offering his extensive knowledge of the magical world and practical advice. In dangerous situations, he can be surprisingly resourceful and provides critical countermeasures when others are panicking. He is also adept at analyzing people. However, his judgment is often clouded by his obsessions, and his loyalty does not stop him from using Negi for his own financial gain.
Chamo’s role in the story is primarily as comic relief, a catalyst for plot events, and a source of magical expertise. He is essential for the creation of Pactio contracts, as he is the one who draws the necessary and complex magic circles. Beyond this, he possesses other notable abilities. His Ermine Flash technique involves using his lighter to ignite flash bangs, creating a brilliant distraction. He also has considerable computer skills for a magical creature, allowing him to order items online. Furthermore, he has shown the ability to cast spells such as anti-telepathy wards and has a disturbing hobby of keeping track of the romantic feelings the various female characters have for Negi.
His relationships with the female cast are predictably volatile. He frequently suffers the wrath of the hot-tempered Asuna Kagurazaka, who is quick to grab him by the head and yell at him whenever he is caught in a perverted act. He typically addresses the girls as Ane-san. While he is a source of trouble, he is also tolerated as Negi’s companion. Over time, despite his unchanging nature, his role as a trusted, if morally questionable, advisor to Negi solidifies. In different adaptations of the story, his portrayal varies slightly, with the Negima!? anime reducing his perversity somewhat compared to the original manga, though he still remains a lecherous and scheming familiar.
