Description
Kazuma Momota is a pivotal supporting character. He is the younger half-brother of the protagonist, Toshihiko Momota, and the son of Juzo Momota, the aging leader of the Kifuuken, a secret school of swordsmen dedicated to hunting flesh-eating monsters known as Shokujinki. It is later revealed that Kazuma's mother is Harumi Kamitsuki, a Shokujinki whom Juzo married, making Kazuma the half-brother of Yuka Kamitsuki, the female lead.

Primarily living in the shadow of his elder brother, Kazuma harbors deep-seated feelings of jealousy and inadequacy. He believes he is never fully recognized by his father or peers, a perception complicated by Juzo's deliberate silence regarding his mother's true nature as a cannibal, which was intended to protect him but instead felt like discrimination. To compensate, Kazuma is highly ambitious and forward-thinking, viewing the Kifuuken's adherence to ancient traditions as outdated and inefficient. He is resentful of the old methods and seeks to drag the organization into the modern era, a goal driven by a genuine desire for effectiveness as much as a personal need to surpass his brother's legacy. His personality is a cocktail of insecurity and pride, making him both a capable reformer and a vulnerable target for manipulation.

Kazuma's primary motivation is to modernize the Kifuuken and prove his worth as a capable leader, something he feels has been unjustly denied to him in favor of Toshihiko. After Juzo is killed by a Shokujinki, Kazuma assumes control of the Kifuuken. He immediately sets about transforming the secret dojo into a corporate entity called the Momota Special Security Company, successfully securing funding and equipping his hunters with powered suits he developed himself to fight monsters more effectively. While he publicly champions this as progress, his role becomes increasingly compromised as he falls under the influence of a powerful landlord, Kyutaro Oba, who provides financial backing. Ultimately, Kazuma is a tragic figure motivated by a desperate need for validation, which leads him to make catastrophic decisions.

As the new leader of the Kifuuken, Kazuma serves as a direct foil to his brother and the old guard. While Toshihiko abandons his duty for a forbidden romance, Kazuma remains, attempting to build a new order out of the chaos. However, his leadership is undermined by increasing casualties and the manipulations of Oba, whose machinations lead to Kazuma losing control of his own organization.

His key relationships are fraught with tension. His bond with Toshihiko is defined by rivalry and unspoken resentment. His father, Juzo, loved him but failed to communicate the truth of his origins, creating a rift. He secretly harbors unrequited romantic feelings for Rie Kakinoki, Toshihiko's former fiancee, who remains fixated on the elder brother. He is also a pawn to Kyutaro Oba, who exploits Kazuma's desires for modernization and recognition to further his own sinister plans.

Kazuma undergoes a harrowing and tragic development arc. He begins as a jealous but ultimately well-intentioned reformer. However, the stress of leadership and manipulation by Oba drive him down a dark path. In a desperate move orchestrated by Oba, Kazuma is transformed into the very monster he has sworn to destroy: a Shokujinki. This revelation, compounded by learning the truth about his mother, causes a complete mental breakdown. In his grief and rage, he loses control to his monstrous instincts, leading to the horrific act of eating Rie. He confronts Oba for the final betrayal but is brutally killed; his own powered suit is used to sever his arms, leaving him to die.

Kazuma is notable for being a technologically-inclined warrior in a world of pure tradition. His primary ability is his intellect and skill as an engineer, having developed a powerful set of mechanized armor, referred to as a powered suit or "Buster Suit," designed to enhance a hunter's combat capabilities against the physically dominant Shokujinki. He also possesses rigorous training in the Kifuuken swordsmanship, though his reliance on technology often puts him at odds with the school's purists. In the end, his latent abilities as a half-breed Shokujinki also emerge, transforming him into a powerful but ultimately uncontrollable cannibal.
