TV-Series
Description
Hajime Ichinose is the main protagonist and a 16-year-old high school student living in Tachikawa City. Very little is revealed about her past, though she seems to have a mother who checks in on her occasionally, and her family appears supportive of her independent and unconventional lifestyle. Before becoming a Gatchaman, she was an active user of the social media platform GALAX and worked a part-time job, already demonstrating a proactive and community-oriented nature. She is recruited by the alien council member J.J. Robinson to become the Gatchaman known as G-101, a role she jumps at willingly, as she had been feeling a sense of boredom and that something was missing from her otherwise content life.
Hajime possesses an overwhelmingly energetic, optimistic, and eccentric personality. She is often seen as a carefree and somewhat strange girl, with a notable fixation on collecting stationery, art supplies, and anything she finds cute or pretty, such as new models of pens and scissors. Her boundless enthusiasm and childlike wonder, however, belie a sharp and unconventional intelligence. While her impulsive nature and willingness to disobey orders initially put her at odds with her more serious teammates, she is in fact incredibly perceptive. She notices small details that others miss, such as a MESS creature mimicking her movements instead of attacking, which leads her to question the necessity of fighting it. Hajime does not accept explanations at face value and thinks in broad, holistic terms, always trying to see the bigger picture and the finer details within it. Her core motivation stems from a place of deep empathy and a desire to protect everyone. She firmly believes that people are fundamentally good and that understanding and communication are preferable to senseless violence. She is not driven by a need to follow orders but by her own strong moral compass, which directs her to do what she believes is right, regardless of the rules or consequences.
In the Gatchaman team, Hajime serves as a catalyst for monumental change. Her actions force her comrades to re-evaluate their long-held methods, motives, and understanding of their roles as heroes. Where other Gatchaman see only enemies to be destroyed, Hajime sees potential for communication, famously befriending a MESS creature when she realizes it is not malevolent. She challenges the linear thinking of her teammate Sugane Tachibana, who is initially tasked with looking after her, and her gentle but firm influence gradually seeps into the rest of the team. Her key relationships are defined by her ability to connect with others on her own terms. She treats everyone with the same egalitarian friendliness, from the mayor and fire chief of Tachikawa to the Prime Minister of Japan. Her most significant and dangerous relationship is with the series antagonist, Berg Katze. True to her nature, she seeks to understand Katze and ultimately discovers that the villain's true identity is a reflection of humanity itself, an epiphany that allows her to seal Katze inside her own NOTE, resulting in a physical fusion that gives her new, red accents on her G-suit and equipment.
Hajime undergoes significant development throughout the series without ever losing her core personality. In the first season, her primary impact is in changing how the Gatchaman operate by introducing concepts of non-violent conflict resolution and public transparency. By the second season, Gatchaman Crowds insight, her role evolves from the disruptive newcomer to a more sagelike figure who understands the gravity of the situation but still trusts in the collective wisdom of the people. Facing the alien Gel Sadra, who attempts to solve humanity's problems through forceful control, Hajime chooses a path of immense personal sacrifice. To make humanity understand the consequences of their choices, she secretly takes Gel Sadra's place, allowing her own teammates to brutally defeat her in a public spectacle, which puts her into a coma. This act reveals her upgraded mentality of self-sacrifice for the greater good, demonstrating how her unwavering principles have only strengthened over time.
As a Gatchaman, Hajime wields a white Designer's NOTE, which grants her the unique ability to design and manifest her innovative ideas and thoughts. Her G-suit is a predominantly pink, blue, and white armor that, following her fusion with Berg Katze in the first season, gains red accents in the second. The suit is equipped with retractable motorized rollerblade boots and wings that grant flight, reflecting her artistic and craft-oriented spirit. Her weaponry is entirely themed around stationery. Her primary armament is a massive pair of energy scissors named Blanc et Noir, which can also function as a large sword. She can also summon smaller throwing scissors called Petits Ciseaux, fire colorful explosive projectiles named Balles Pastels from her right hand, and use adhesive tape-like abilities to restrain opponents. As a result of merging with Berg Katze, she gains the villain's shapeshifting ability, allowing her to duplicate the appearance and abilities of those she touches, a skill she uses to disguise herself as Gel Sadra. Despite the dark entity now fused within her, Hajime's will remains her own; she can suppress Katze's attempts to take control with a cheerful smile and a firm command to be quiet.
