TV-Series
Description
Pai-Man is a small alien and the self-appointed commander of the Gatchaman team in the anime Gatchaman Crowds and its sequel Gatchaman Crowds Insight. He stands only about 33 centimeters tall and has a small, round body with a white and black color pattern that closely resembles that of a panda, although he strongly dislikes being compared to one. Despite his tiny size and unassuming appearance, he carries the designation G-3 and is the oldest active Gatchaman, having served in the role for several hundred years. He comes from a long line of Gatchaman commanders, and the higher authority J.J. Robinson entrusted him with leading the elite team and issuing its orders.
In personality, Pai-Man is a strict, authoritative figure with a short temper. He takes his position as leader very seriously and expects the Gatchaman members under his command to follow protocol and obey orders. He is deeply devoted to J.J. Robinson, whom he fully admires, and he places utmost faith and importance on J.J.'s predictions. As a result, he rarely questions the instructions he is given and tries to carry out his mission faithfully, trusting that the guidance he receives is correct. This sense of duty and loyalty to the Gatchaman legacy defines his behavior, and even when events do not unfold as planned, his instinct is to uphold his responsibilities as commander.
His role in the story is that of the leader and coordinator of the Gatchaman crew operating out of Tachikawa. Because of his small stature, he does not serve as a frontline combatant; instead, he gives orders, relays information and predictions from J.J. Robinson, and directs the activities of the other Gatchaman during missions. The team he commands consists of both human members, including Hajime Ichinose, Sugane Tachibana, Joe Hibiki, and Utsutsu Miya, as well as the alien member O.D., and Pai-Man supervises them as a group. His authority is central to the team's operations, and he acts as the bridge between the Gatchaman and the larger alien organization behind them.
His key relationships are defined primarily by his position. He regards J.J. Robinson with complete admiration and treats his directives as the foundation of his own leadership. With the other Gatchaman, he maintains a commanding and somewhat formal manner, issuing orders and expecting discipline, even though the team includes a number of strong and independent personalities. This contrast between his authoritative attitude and his diminutive, panda-like appearance is one of the defining features of his character.
Throughout the course of the series and continuing into Gatchaman Crowds Insight, Pai-Man remains a main character and the team's commander. In the second season, the Gatchaman face a new crisis when a massive UFO crashes into rural Japan, and Pai-Man continues to coordinate the team's response while remaining loyal to J.J. Robinson's directives. His development is tied closely to his role as leader: he is a small and seemingly comical creature who nonetheless carries the weight of leadership, centuries of Gatchaman tradition, and the responsibility of protecting Earth, and the story repeatedly tests whether his faith in orders and in the team is well placed.
In terms of notable abilities, Pai-Man's strengths are not physical. His chief assets are his extensive experience, his knowledge of the Gatchaman organization, and his authority as commander. He is able to interpret and relay the predictions and instructions of J.J. Robinson, coordinate the actions of the entire team, and draw on several hundred years of service when making decisions. His combination of ancient experience, strict dedication to duty, and determined leadership is what defines his contribution to the Gatchaman, even though his appearance makes him easy to underestimate.
