Description
Jō Hibiki is a central character known as Gatchaman number 89, a graduate of a top-ranking university who has been a member of the Gatchaman team for ten years prior to the events of the story. He presents two distinct sides to the world, adopting a polished and professional appearance during his day job at the town hall's Living Safety Department, where he wears glasses and keeps his hair tidy. In contrast, his off-duty look is more laid-back and rugged, with his hair down, no glasses, and often a cigarette in hand.

Personality-wise, Hibiki is fundamentally an aloof and pragmatic individual. He is one of the quieter members of the G-Crew, often sitting in the background and speaking concisely only when necessary. His worldview is initially characterized by a deep-seated pessimism; he holds feelings of despair towards humanity and believes that the time-span of the world is limited. This cynical perspective is not born of shyness but rather a clear-eyed, and sometimes rude, assessment of reality. At his core, however, he harbors an optimistic dream of achieving world peace, a goal that conflicts with his distrust of the general public. He believes that certain powers, like the Crowds system, are far too dangerous and premature for humanity to wield responsibly.

While typically calm and collected within the group, Hibiki exhibits a dangerously self-destructive and hotheaded tendency when acting alone. He has a history of recklessly confronting overwhelmingly powerful foes, such as Berg-Katze and Gelsadra, despite being warned of his low chances of success. This behavior is not simple bravado; it stems from a pragmatic, if rash, desire to prevent a situation from escalating, even at the cost of his own safety. This vulnerability is his greatest weakness, as these solo charges often result in his near-death or severe injury.

In the story, Hibiki plays the role of a pragmatic realist, often clashing with the more optimistic or idealistic views of other team members. His motivations shift from a general despair to a specific drive to protect society from what he sees as dangerous tools. He is deeply analytical and efficient, often finishing his tasks quickly. A significant part of his motivation is the desire to prevent another catastrophic incident like the battle that seriously wounded Rui, which reinforces his opposition to the Crowds system. He agrees with the alien Gelsadra’s platform to abolish these powers, believing that removing them is the safest path forward for humanity.

Key relationships heavily influence his development. His ten-year tenure makes him a senior member, but his enthusiasm is notably revived upon meeting the eccentric new recruit, Hajime Ichinose. Though he calls her little lady and maintains a distant facade, he holds a genuine interest in her unique perspective. His closest bond is arguably with his teammate Sugane Tachibana. This relationship is defined by a deep, if understated, affection that manifests as relentless teasing and mockery. However, this playful cruelty masks a profound loyalty; when Hibiki is defeated in battle, Sugane instinctively arrives to protect him, and Hibiki immediately prioritizes cradling his injured friend over his own defense.

Throughout the narrative, Hibiki undergoes significant development. Initially disillusioned and bordering on hopeless, he rediscovers his passion for his work and his role as a Gatchaman through his interactions with Hajime. He evolves from a man who keeps everything to himself to someone who, while still reserved, is more open about his stances, even when they place him in opposition to his comrades. His mannerisms also adapt to his public role; for instance, he attempts to quit smoking to maintain a better public image while serving as the mayor's secretary.

In terms of abilities, Hibiki wields a NOTE of heat waves, granting him potent command over fire. His Gatchaman form is a large, imposing black and orange iron oni with a flaming head and large wings for flight. His offensive arsenal is vast and destructive. He can unleash Burning Rain, a hail of fiery bullets from his gauntlets, or throw Flame Feather dart-like projectiles. For close-quarters combat, he uses Burning Hammer, a rocket punch, and Burning Bind, a flying fist attached to a chain. His ultimate technique is the Phoenix Dive, where he engulfs his body in flames to become a phoenix and crashes into the target, creating a massive explosion. In the second season, he demonstrates an additional attack called Volcano, a powerful flamethrower blast from his abdomen. While his mobility in the air is excellent, his ground-based agility is lower compared to other Gatchaman members.
