Kanan Chinami is a student at the Hiiragi Academy's Ichou Branch Campus. She is a teenage girl with red hair cut to neck-length and pink eyes, and her birthday is on June 19. Before her introduction, she was known as the school's idol due to rumors about her having what is called an anime voice. This status was later taken by another student named Araki Koutarou. Many male students at the academy desire to date her, largely for the excuse to hear her unusual voice.

The central aspect of Kanan's personality is her deep shame and secretiveness regarding her own voice, which sounds like that of an anime character. Because of this, she developed a fear of being ridiculed and chose to force herself into mutism. Initially, she communicates with others only by texting on her phone and speaks to herself only through her thoughts. This self-imposed silence is driven by a strong motivation to hide a part of herself that she dislikes and believes will make her a target of mockery.

Kanan's role in the story begins when a friend, Suzune, asks the protagonist Junichirou Kagami to tutor her in physics. Junichirou, an otaku, becomes interested in her precisely because of her anime voice. As he becomes her home tutor, he helps her prepare for a physics test. When she is about to back out at the last second, he tells her that he is only interested in the person the voice comes from, as it is a unique part of her that cannot be replicated. Appreciating this sentiment, she finally speaks directly to him, whispering into his ear. This marks a significant turning point for her.

Her key relationship is with Junichirou Kagami, who acts as a catalyst for her development. Following his encouragement, she joins the Broadcasting Club, where she becomes a hyperactive radio announcer for the school, finally finding satisfaction with her voice. Afterwards, she is often seen alongside her classmate Shikishima, following Junichirou's activities. She also develops a bond with Koutarou, acting as a big sister figure to him after he praises her craftsmanship in creating unique items. Later, with encouragement from a famous voice actress named Kawashima Miyuki, Kanan gains an interest in voice acting and forms a friendly rivalry with a character named Kanou to become a better voice actress. She is voted as a candidate to follow Junichirou to the main campus for a major event, but initially fails to be chosen due to her air-headedness, though she later transfers as one of his reserve students. Her most notable ability is her voice itself, which she eventually learns to use for radio announcing and aspires to use in a professional voice-acting career.
