Description
Daiki Tasaki is a main character in the story, a sixteen-year-old student at Ageha High School who lives in the city of Chichibu. He is a tall young man with a shaved head, grey hair, and grey eyes, and his strong, intimidating build makes him noticeably larger than many of his classmates, such as Takumi Sakagami. For most of the story, his right arm is in a sling due to an injury.
Daiki has a hot-tempered and irascible personality, often coming across as harsh and unfriendly because of his direct way of speaking and his aggressive expressions. This rough exterior leads others to mistake him for a delinquent or a troublemaker, but beneath this surface lies a fundamentally honest and straightforward individual. He has a strong sense of responsibility and is someone who, when he makes a mistake, is quick to apologize sincerely and acknowledge his wrongdoings. While he struggles to express his feelings, he is capable of being friendly and demonstrates a deep, if sometimes awkward, team spirit and care for those around him.
His character is largely defined by his lost dream of becoming a professional baseball player. He was the former ace pitcher and star of his school's baseball team, having led them to the brink of qualifying for the national Koshien tournament. However, a critical defeat, combined with a painful injury to his right elbow, ended his aspirations and left him unable to play. Forced to give up his position as ace to a younger student named Kazuharu Yamaji, Daiki is left feeling frustrated, bitter, and adrift. Although he continues to appear at practice and offers stern, critical guidance to his underclassmen, his unresolved anger and disappointment lead his juniors to mock him behind his back, calling him useless.
His role in the story begins when he and three of his classmates, the withdrawn Jun Naruse, the apathetic Takumi Sakagami, and the pragmatic Natsuki Nito, are reluctantly assigned by a friend to serve on the committee for a community exchange event. Initially, Daiki is resistant and dismissive of the project, and his bluntness leads him to say hurtful things to Jun without considering her feelings. However, by watching Jun's sincere and determined efforts to overcome her own trauma and communicate through a musical, Daiki's perspective begins to change. He comes to apologize for his previous behavior and commits himself fully to the committee's work, eventually dressing in a whimsical costume for the musical and showing a previously unseen willingness to cooperate and care for others.
Daiki has several key relationships that influence his development. He shares a friendship with Kazuki Joushima, the baseball club's captain and a fellow classmate. He is also shown to have had an initial, unrequited interest in Natsuki Nito, asking her out only to be refused. As he works alongside Jun Naruse, he grows to admire her strength and hidden warmth, and by the end of the story, his feelings for her evolve into a romantic confession. His primary ability is his considerable talent as a baseball pitcher, where his rigorous nature and leadership on the mound were powerful enough to bring his team to the verge of a national championship.
