TV-Series
Description
Hong Lihua, also known as Reika, is a fifteen-year-old Element and pilot of Chinese origin. She is a young woman with a boyish appearance and is characterized by a deeply pessimistic and sensitive nature. This outlook stems from her conviction that she carries a strange ability to bring misfortune to herself and anyone who draws close to her. This belief causes her considerable grief, leading her to isolate herself from others to protect them from her perceived bad luck.
Despite this heavy burden, Reika is a naturally talented fighter and is recognized as one of DEAVA's top Elements, alongside Sirius and Glen. Her abilities are tied to her Element powers, which are akin to psychic abilities such as psychometry and telekinesis. She also possesses high spiritual sensitivity, which allows her to see the weaknesses of the mythical beasts known as Harvest Beasts. However, her unfortunate disposition often causes these abilities to become a hindrance rather than a help in practical situations.
Reika's primary motivation is to fight and be useful, even if it comes at a great personal cost. She harbors a deep-seated wish to overcome her circumstances, and at her core, she prays, It doesn't matter if I'm cursed or unhappy, so please let me fight together. This desire to participate and be of service drives her actions.
In her role within the story, Reika struggles with her self-doubt and the consequences of her powers. She blames herself for an accident that put her friend Glen into a coma, a traumatic event that reinforces her negative self-image. Her narrative arc involves learning to accept her abilities and eventually overcoming her sense of rotten luck to turn it into a weapon when piloting the mechanical angel Aquarion.
Her relationships are significantly shaped by her perceived curse. She has a close friendship with fellow pilot Glen, who gave her a charm to ward against bad luck, an item she treasures dearly. She develops romantic feelings for Sirius de Alisia, and she tries to get close to him, though his sister Silvia often sabotages these attempts because she believes Reika is bad luck. Reika also forms a friendship with Apollo, who is unique in that he does not care about her ability to cause misfortune. Later, she becomes a mentor and friend to Tsugumi Rosenmeier, teaching her how to pilot and earning the younger girl's deep admiration.
Reika's development takes a significant turn in the OVA continuity, where the circumstances of her past life are explored. Believing herself to be a reincarnation of a legendary figure named Celiane, she grapples with jealousy and confusion. It is ultimately revealed that she is actually the reincarnation of Scorpius, a prince who betrayed humanity. This revelation forces her to confront a darker aspect of her identity, though she eventually recognizes her mistakes and seeks forgiveness. In this version of the story, it is her desperate plea to fight that curses her with the misfortune seen in the television series. Throughout her journey, she learns to stop avoiding others and instead embraces her role as a pilot, transforming what she once saw as a weakness into a defining strength.
