Description
Peta is a character in the anime and manga series MÄR, where he belongs to the Chess Pieces, the story's main antagonistic organization. He holds the high rank of Knight, is regarded as the third strongest member of that rank, and serves as the strategic officer of the Knights. He is also the first Chess Piece to be introduced in the story.
Very little is revealed about Peta's early background. At some point before the events of the series, he befriended Phantom, a Kaldean outlaw who would later become the strongest Knight, and he witnessed the breakup between Phantom and his lover Alma. Peta eventually received the same Zombie Tattoo as Phantom, a mark that bound him to share Phantom's destructive path for eternity. After the Chess Pieces were formed as an army, Peta quickly rose to knighthood and became the Knights' strategist. During the previous War Games, he did not fight in the battles themselves but instead used his abilities to broadcast the matches across MÄR-Heaven. When Phantom was killed in combat by Danna, Peta took over as leader of the Chess army until Phantom could be resurrected. During that period he encountered Eileen, a woman who had been tortured and disfigured, accepted her into the Chess Pieces, granted her a forbidden Ghost ÄRM, and trained her until she became the Knight known as Chimera. He also regularly sent thieves into the cave where Phantom's former weapon Babbo was sealed, hoping to retrieve it and use it to bring Phantom back.
In personality, Peta is presented as one of the darkest and most mysterious figures in MÄR-Heaven. He is generally calm and intelligent, and he knows exactly how much effort a given situation requires, but he is also sly, cunning, and bloodthirsty. He has a habit of drinking the blood of others from a wine glass decorated with a skull. Like many members of the Chess Pieces, he views ordinary humans as worthless beings. His defining trait, however, is his complete loyalty to Phantom. He subscribes to Phantom's beliefs without question and follows any of his wishes, and Phantom in turn acknowledges Peta as his friend.
Peta's role in the story begins early. He first appears during Jack's fight with the Rogelu Brothers, two werewolf thieves, and he uses his Magic Mirror Ring to capture an image of Babbo, the sentient weapon that the protagonist Ginta has just claimed. He then spreads word throughout MÄR-Heaven that whoever brings him Babbo will be rewarded with one hundred million pewters, which sets many thieves against Ginta and his companions. After Phantom is resurrected, Peta cancels the search and visits the fortress of the thief guild Luberia to deliver the news. When the angered thieves try to kill him, he easily kills them instead. This act leads Nanashi, the leader of Luberia, to end the guild's neutrality and dedicate himself to defeating Peta. During the Chess Pieces' war campaign, Peta broadcasts a message across MÄR-Heaven declaring that the people have grown soft with peace and that the Chess Pieces, with their goals of war and destruction, will inevitably triumph. He also announces the beginning of the new War Games, and during the tournament he again uses his dimensional magic to broadcast the battles.
In the final round of the War Games, Peta faces Nanashi in combat. Nanashi struggles because physical attacks cannot harm Peta and lightning-based attacks are reflected back at him. During the fight, Peta explains that he serves Phantom devotedly and follows his every wish, though Nanashi is concerned only with avenging the people of Luberia. Nanashi survives Peta's attacks thanks to a holy ÄRM given to him by Alviss, then destroys Peta's Blood Body and forces him to call upon his guardian. Nanashi responds with his own guardian, which destroys Peta's guardian and restrains him. Nanashi then incapacitates Peta with his lightning attack and finishes him off with the Griffin Lance. As he dies, Peta reflects on his promise to Phantom and regrets that he will not live to see their dream of taking the world together. His spirit appears before Phantom, and Phantom later destroys Peta's corpse, thanks him for everything he has done, and sheds tears at his loss.
In terms of abilities, Peta is considered a dangerous enemy because his standing as the third strongest Knight is paired with his strategic mind. His individual ÄRMs are not especially powerful on their own, but he uses his intelligence to find many different applications for them. His arsenal includes Sickle Death, a weapon ÄRM in the form of a scythe engraved with a vulture's head; Magic Mirror Ring, a dimension ÄRM that records images and can project them across any reflective surface, including the moon and the sun; Dark Reflector, a dimension ÄRM that absorbs enemy attacks and blasts them back; Bloody Body, a nature ÄRM that turns his body into blood and makes him immune to physical attacks; Garnet Claw, a ghost ÄRM that creates razor-sharp blood-colored claws; and Blood Syringe, a unique ÄRM made of spiked orbs that drain an opponent's blood and congeal it into bullet-like projectiles. In the manga he also possesses Abyss Cannon, a ghost ÄRM that calls tortured souls from hell and fires them at the enemy, while in the anime he has Chain Soldiers, a guardian ÄRM that summons armored soldiers linked together by chains to ensnare opponents. His own guardian, Body Eye, is summoned through his opera necklace and takes the form of a wingless demon marked with runic inscriptions.
