TV-Series
Description
Phantom, also known by the false identity Tom, is the commander of the Chess Pieces' combat forces and the strongest of the thirteen Knights, making him the third most powerful member of the organization after the King and Queen. He is a tall, lean man with lavender hair and lilac eyes, with his bangs covering the right side of his face.

His background begins in Caldia, the island nation where magical artifacts called ÄRMs originate, roughly thirty years before the main events of the story. As a child of about ten, Phantom discovered the Orb of Caldia, a mysterious artifact that contained the sealed consciousnesses of great evils, and he became fascinated with it, visiting it nearly every day until he was discovered by guards. Caldia's law demanded that his parents kill him for this transgression, but instead of obeying, his parents took their own lives. With no relatives left, Phantom was imprisoned for life. Years later, the witch Diana came to him in prison and recruited him with promises of power, conquest, and her vision of ruling the world. Together they stole hundreds of ÄRMs from Caldia, including the sentient weapon Babbo, and used them to build and lead the organization known as the Chess Pieces. Diana later became the Queen of the Chess Pieces and gave Phantom the Zombie Tattoo, a curse that rendered his body unable to die and granted him immortality, with a keyhole-shaped mark on his chest serving as his only weakness.

Personality-wise, Phantom is callous, sadistic, and takes great pleasure in bloodshed, destruction, and war. He presents a calm, smiling exterior that conceals a deep disdain for humanity, shaped both by the influence of the King who manipulates him and by his lifelong grief over the deaths of his parents. He is charismatic and commands intense fear, respect, and even devotion from those around him, and he rules his subordinates with an iron hand, tolerating no cowardice and executing his own soldiers for fleeing or disobeying orders. At the same time, he craves entertainment above all else and hopes that each battle will bring him an opponent strong enough to amuse him. He can act politely and even kindly toward enemies, though in a mocking manner, and he is ruthless in pursuit of what he wants.

His motivations center on overcoming the limitations of human existence and on finding stimulation in a world he finds too easy to conquer. He was obsessed with the immortality Diana granted him, believing it elevated him above flawed and mortal humanity, and he sought worthy adversaries to make conquest interesting. Before learning of the hero Ginta, he complained that taking over the world too easily would be boring and wished for another powerful fighter from another world to challenge him.

In the story, Phantom serves as the chief military leader of the Chess Pieces and, for much of the series, appears to be its supreme commander, though it is later revealed that the King and Queen outrank him. After his resurrection, he orders the Chess Pieces to resume their conquest of MÄR-Heaven, quickly seizing much of the land and initiating the second War Games against Ginta's team, known as Team MÄR. One of his most notable tactics is his use of the identity of Tom. Tom is a young boy from the town of Vestry whose parents were killed by the Chess Pieces and who possessed the ability to see ghosts, a power the organization found valuable. Phantom adopts this disguise to befriend Ginta and observe him closely; in the anime, he even stages a scene in which Ginta witnesses Tom being killed by Peta, only to reveal later that Tom never truly existed, leaving Ginta angered and shaken. Beyond this deception, Phantom watches the War Games from the sidelines, invades Caldia during the fourth round, brutally punishes subordinates who fail him, and personally battles Ginta on more than one occasion, completely outclassing him at first and later engaging him in the final round of the War Games.

His key relationships shape much of his arc. He shares a complex bond with Ginta, the protagonist from another world, whom he becomes fascinated with and deliberately pushes to grow stronger, wanting to be entertained by his rise even as Ginta cannot forgive him for his cruelty. He is genuinely close to Peta, a fellow Knight and his most trusted friend, and he mourns Peta's death with tears, showing that some human feeling survives beneath his cold exterior. His former lover is Alma, a sailor from Vestry, whose relationship with him ended when she rejected his embrace of immortality and he refused to accept her respect for the natural cycle of life and death. His loyal follower Candice loves him deeply and protects him during his final days, and in the anime, the spirit of Alma appears to him to assure him that he was never unloved, allowing his soul to find peace before he dies. He also has a history with Alviss, whom he inflicted with the Zombie Tattoo during Alviss's childhood, and with Diana, his patron and ruler, who ultimately abandons him as useless after his defeat.

In terms of development, Phantom begins as an untouchable, seemingly invincible figure whose immortality makes him fearless, but his encounters with Ginta gradually expose his limits. He loses his original weapon Babbo, which passes to Ginta, and he relies increasingly on other ÄRMs, including replacements he gathers after his resurrection. After his defeat, his fate differs between versions of the story, but in both he faces a final, more vulnerable chapter: in the anime, he is transported to a remote fortress by his Ghost Chess subordinates after being cast aside by Diana, where Candice watches over him and Alma's parting words bring him comfort; in the manga, he awaits the arrival of Team MÄR and is ultimately killed by Alviss, apologizing to the grieving Candice and bidding the world farewell as he passes. This ending reveals that beneath his terrifying power and cruelty, he retained remnants of grief and longing for connection.

His notable abilities are extensive and revolve around magical ÄRMs. He is a master fighter even without artifacts, possessing overwhelming strength, but his true power lies in his arsenal. He formerly wielded Babbo, a powerful sentient weapon that contained the soul of the evil sealed within Caldia's Orb and could be used to perform the Zombie Tattoo curse. After losing Babbo, he used other weapons such as Allumage, a blade connected by chains to a massive bat-winged fireball that could expand, shrink, or explode. Phantom Glass is a mirror-like trap that seals an enemy inside a two-dimensional surface and destroys them along with the mirror if they cannot escape in time. Phantom Cannon fires a devastating red beam of destruction from his arm. Soul Infinity creates butterfly-shaped red lights that absorb the life force of everyone nearby and convert it into magical attacks, with greater effectiveness against opponents who have weak magical power. His bandaged left arm conceals a bizarre apparatus made of hexagonal green scales that can fire swarms of sharp projectiles, gather into a massive sphere for bombardment, or form a large hexagonal shield for defense. He also commands a series of Guardian ÄRMs, numbered from I to X, which summon powerful creatures to fight for him. These include No. 2 Lemures, a black horned giant capable of crushing foes with immense arm strength and firing purple electric shocks from its horns, and No. 5 Dead Dragon, a winged dinosaur that breathes large-scale flames or charges up to fire a purple beam. The other Guardians include a giant rabbit doll that shoots destructive beams, a stone giant, a womanlike monster with a tree-trunk head and floating hands, a spear-and-shield humanoid, a highly defensive tree creature, a floating doll capable of spatial movement, a giant egg in gentleman's attire, and a black ghost-like monster that launches psychic attacks. Combined with his immortality, his charisma, and his tactical cruelty, these abilities make him one of the most feared warriors in all of MÄR-Heaven.
