Description
Phantom is a major antagonist in the anime MÄR, where he holds the position of the strongest Knight in the Chess Pieces and serves as the commander of the organization's combat forces. In terms of overall strength within the army, he ranks third, behind only the Queen and the King, though for much of the story he appears to outsiders as the leader of the Chess Pieces. He is depicted as a tall, lean young man with lavender hair and lilac-colored eyes, and his long bangs typically cover the right side of his face.

His background begins in the magical island nation of Caldia, where he was born to parents who later died tragically. As a ten-year-old, Phantom discovered a mysterious door while exploring the floating castle of Caldia, and inside it he found the Orb of Caldia, a magical artifact in which the consciousnesses of the world's greatest evils were sealed. He was drawn to the Orb and began visiting it almost daily, and its influence is said to have amplified his desires. When the guards discovered him, Caldia's law demanded that his parents kill him, but they chose to take their own lives instead, leaving Phantom to be imprisoned for life. Years later, while still in prison, he was approached by Diana, who recruited him with promises of world conquest and a vision of superiority over ordinary humans. Together, they stole hundreds of ÄRMs from Caldia's vault, along with the sentient weapon Babbo, and set out across MÄR-Heaven to build the army that became the Chess Pieces. During these travels, Phantom befriended Peta and fell in love with a sailor named Alma, but his romance faded because of his growing obsession with immortality, which Alma rejected in favor of the natural cycle of life and death. Eventually, Diana was enthroned as Queen of the Chess Pieces, and she bestowed the Zombie Tattoo upon Phantom, stripping away his ability to die.

In personality, Phantom is callous and sadistic, and he takes genuine pleasure in bloodshed, destruction, and war. He presents a composed and even kind exterior, though his courtesy toward enemies tends to be mocking. Behind his ever-smiling mask lies a deep contempt for humanity, shaped partly by the grief over his parents' deaths and partly by the corrupting influence of the Orb. He is also a highly charismatic figure, commanding fear, respect, and in some cases devotion from the members of the Chess Pieces. Phantom craves entertainment above all else, and he hopes that each battle will bring a strong opponent worthy of his attention. He respects bravery in his enemies and shows no mercy toward cowardice in his own ranks, going so far as to execute subordinates he deems weak or disloyal.

His motivations are driven by a disdain for ordinary humans and a belief in the ideal of conquest. He was initially infatuated with immortality, believing that it would free him from the flawed and limited nature of human existence, and this outlook shaped both his worldview and his personal relationships. At the same time, he seeks amusement through conflict and is dissatisfied when victory comes too easily, which is why he takes a particular interest in powerful opponents.

In the story, Phantom plays a central role as the primary antagonist of the protagonist Ginta and his allies. Before the events of the series, he participated in the first War Games, where he fought the legendary warrior Danna to a draw, losing an arm while Danna received a fatal wound. Phantom was also the original wielder of Babbo, the powerful ÄRM that Ginta later comes to carry, and he used it to place the Zombie Tattoo curse on several characters, including Alviss, Rolan, and Peta. After being revived, he leads the Chess Pieces in the second War Games and personally faces Ginta in the final round. Though he overwhelms Ginta early on, he is ultimately defeated after a long and grueling battle, and his death follows in the aftermath of the conflict, with the circumstances of his end differing between the manga and anime versions.

His key relationships are defined by loyalty, rivalry, and loss. Diana is the figure who gave him purpose and immortality, but she later discards him as no longer useful after his defeat. Peta is his closest friend and trusted second-in-command, and Phantom is visibly shaken and weeps when Peta dies. Candice is one of his most devoted followers, having fallen in love with him after he defeated her when she was a mercenary captain, and she remains loyal to him until the end. His relationship with Ginta is complicated by his decision to take the guise of a boy named Tom to befriend and manipulate him, and their rivalry becomes the centerpiece of the final War Games. Even in his emotionally hardened state, he retains moments of humanity, such as his grief for Peta and his farewell to Candice before his death.

Phantom's development traces a path from a curious child influenced by a malevolent artifact, to a devoted servant of Diana, to an immortal and ruthless military leader, and finally to a defeated figure who regains some measure of human feeling. Despite the corruption he undergoes, he is never entirely stripped of his capacity for sorrow and attachment.

In terms of abilities, Phantom is one of the most powerful ÄRM users in MÄR-Heaven, and he relies heavily on Guardian-type ÄRMs. In the past, he used Babbo, which contained the soul of the Orb and allowed him to cast the Zombie Tattoo, a curse that spreads a mark across the victim's body and eventually turns them into a zombie under his control. After his resurrection, he replaces Babbo with a weapon called Allumage, a massive bat-winged fireball connected to a blade by chains that can expand, shrink, or explode. He also commands a variety of other ÄRMs, including Phantom Glass, which traps enemies within a two-dimensional mirror surface; Phantom Cannon, which fires a destructive red beam; and Soul Infinity, which creates butterfly-shaped red lights that absorb the life force of nearby people and convert it into magical attacks. His left arm, hidden beneath bandages, is composed of hexagonal green scales and can launch swarms of sharp projectiles, form a massive sphere for bombardment, or assemble into a large shield. He also possesses numerous Guardian ÄRMs, including dolls, stone giants, and spectral monsters, with his two strongest guardians being Lemures, a black horned giant capable of immense physical force and electric shocks, and Dead Dragon, a winged dragon that breathes large-scale flames or fires a charged purple beam. His body itself is rendered effectively immortal by the Zombie Tattoo given to him by Diana, making him one of the most dangerous combatants in the entire world.
