Description
There are two distinct individuals who carry the name Joel Goldschmidt, separated by over a century, but whose actions are deeply intertwined with the history of the Red Shield organization and its battle against the chiropterans.

The original Joel Goldschmidt was a wealthy 19th-century researcher and the head of the Goldschmidt family. He established a private research facility known as the Zoo in Bordeaux, France, to study the evolution of various species. His most significant discovery came in 1832 when he acquired a mysterious mummified corpse found in Iceland, which turned out to be a queen of the chiropteran race. Upon dissecting the mummy in 1833 with the help of his assistant, Amshel, two small cocoons were found from which two baby girls emerged. He named one child Saya, raising her as his own daughter in a loving environment. The other sister was given no name and was treated as a cold, scientific experiment, kept locked in a tower with her basic needs provided by Amshel. Joel’s personality was deeply contradictory: a kind and caring father figure to Saya yet a cruel and detached scientist to her sister, Diva. His research and observations were meticulously recorded in a journal that became known as Joel’s Diary, which would be passed down through his bloodline. This arrangement ended in tragedy in 1883 on his 72nd birthday, when Saya released Diva from the tower to sing at the celebration; Diva then killed Joel, an act that also led to the burning of the Zoo.

The sixth individual to hold the name, Joel Goldschmidt VI, is the direct descendant of the original researcher and serves as the current head of the Red Shield in the modern era. He inherited this position and the burden of the family legacy following the death of his father, the fifth Joel. His primary motivation is to rectify the catastrophic mistake of his ancestor by leading the Red Shield in its fight against Diva and the chiropterans. He carries the weight of his family’s past, as the Goldschmidt name and the crucial information within Joel’s Diary have been passed down specifically to guide this battle. In his role, he acts as a strategic supporter, often working from the background and trusting his field operatives like David to manage day-to-day operations. He is a man of considerable wealth and influence, which he uses to fund and organize the Red Shield’s activities. Though typically displaying a kind-hearted, generous, and calm demeanor, with a perpetual smile, he is also capable of making difficult decisions for the sake of his mission.

As the series progresses, Joel VI’s role becomes more active and precarious. His headquarters is destroyed in a direct assault by Diva, and during this attack, he suffers a severe spinal injury that leaves him confined to a wheelchair. Despite this physical setback, his resolve does not waver. He continues to lead the Red Shield from a position of vulnerability, working to rebuild the organization after it has been shattered and betrayed from within by his deputy, Collins. He maintains key relationships with several central characters; he deeply trusts his operative David, and at a critical juncture, he reveals the entire tragic history contained in Joel’s Diary to Kai, forcing the young man to confront the truth about Saya and the chiropterans. His leadership and financial resources are vital to the Red Shield’s survival, and near the end of the conflict, he personally aids Kai by providing a new bullet igniter for his weapon, demonstrating his continued commitment to the cause. His ultimate fate is to see the long struggle conclude, after which he works to formally rebuild the Red Shield in a new era.
