TV-Series
Description
Julia Silverstein is a medical doctor and researcher who serves as a key member of the Red Shield organization, the secret society dedicated to fighting the chiropteran creatures. A graduate of the Sorbonne University, she is a highly skilled clinician who approaches her work with clinical precision, often finding it easier to interact with others analytically rather than emotionally. Her primary role is as the medical supervisor for Saya, the series' protagonist, administering her blood transfusions and monitoring her health and mental state. She is also responsible for conducting vital research into chiropteran biology to aid in the Red Shield's war against them.
Despite her professional demeanor, Julia struggles with personal loyalties that put her at odds with the organization. Her mentor and supervisor, Dr. Collins, defects to the rival Cinq Flèches group because he disagrees with the Red Shield's goal of exterminating chiropterans and wishes to publish his research. Convincing Julia that continuing her scientific work is paramount, he persuades her to betray the Red Shield and join him. This decision leads her to become the personal physician for Diva, Saya's enemy, after Diva becomes pregnant. Her time with Cinq Flèches allows her to gain invaluable insight into chiropteran DNA, specifically discovering a key component referred to as the D base.
Throughout her journey, Julia's relationships are central to her development. She shares a complex dynamic with David, a field agent for the Red Shield, for whom she harbors strong romantic feelings. David consistently acts stoically towards her, though he repeatedly tells her she is welcome to return to the organization. After Dr. Collins, driven by professional jealousy, attempts to murder Julia, David saves her but is shot in the process. Julia keeps vigil over him in the hospital and eventually kisses him while he sleeps. Her relationship with Dr. Collins is that of a protégé who greatly values his opinion, making his betrayal feel personal and ultimately dangerous for her. She also develops a professional respect for Saya, maintaining a doctor-patient relationship with her while working to understand the girl's unique condition.
Julia's notable abilities lie not in combat, but in her scientific and medical expertise. She is the head of research for the Red Shield's medical staff, a capable and ambitious young chiropteran researcher. Her skills are directly responsible for major scientific breakthroughs, including extending the life of the Schiff named Lulu and developing a serum from Saya's blood that can neutralize the effects of a destructive biological agent known as Delta 67. By the end of the series, she has returned to the Red Shield, using the knowledge she gained while working with the enemy to aid in the final battle and to push forward life-saving medical advancements.
